Installing XP Pro on Dimension W2K

Dimension 4100, P3, 933 MHz, 384 MG SDRAM, 20.4 GB HD, W2K SP4, Norrton SystemWorks 2002, SpyBot 1.2, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Zone Alarm Personal, MS AntiSpyware 1.02, MS Office Small Business 2000

Hello,

Sorry about the previous post with no text - I hit the enter key to go to next line and the message posted - tried to edit but there was no option to do so.  Anyway, I would like to install XP Pro on the computer described above which has become bombarded with spyware, adware, malware, etc. to the point where I can't send or receive email or access the internet.  I run SpyBot and Ad-Aware on a regular basis and have also tried MS AntiSpyware and SpyBlaster but there are some files which can't be removed by any of these programs:

DyFuCA.Internet Optimizer
n-case
Elitum.Elite Bar

ITS tool bar

Will installing the new OS eliminate these buggers or do I have to find a way to remove them beforehand?  Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks, Joan

jnerney,

If you do a clean install of XP (which can be done with an upgrade CD since you already have Win2K) you will delete all partitions on your hard drive, create new ones, then format them. This will remove all the garbage which is currently intractable.

There is some potentially useful information here.

Thanks for the information, Denny.  After reading through it, I have one question concerning backing up my Outlook folders.  Microsoft's instructions specifically mention backing up to a CDRW,  Zip or SyQuest drive  - I can't use any of these options.  Do you know if I can just copy the pst files to a USD flash drive and them import from that drive when new OS is installed?  Thanks, Joan
