Internet Connection Icon not showing in notification area

I just performed a Windows Update with the latest security patches (Aug9,2005). Whenever I connecto to the Internet I do so manually clicking the ADSL icon in the desktop and once connected an icon for the connection will show up in the system tray. Problem is that now even though the connection is active, the icon does not display in the notification area, eventhough I did not change the settings. I checked them again, and they are correctly set to have the connection icon show up. Any suggestion? Thanks.

You could create a new connection (delete the old)

or make sure the icon is not just "hidden"

Did you try rebooting?

Hope this helps.

Msil, yes, i tried all of the following:
- I deleted and created a new connection
- I made sure the icon is not hidden from taskbar properties
- I checked the icon properties from network connections to make sure the display checkbox is marked
- I rebooted after running chmdsk
but none of these helped.
Some curious behavior:
- If I log off and log on again the icon will show up
- Eventhough I am connected to the internet the DSL connection icon in Network Connections shows a "Disconnected" status
