Internet Explorer cant find Server

After Service Pack IE says "can't find server" when trying to access website.  I use both ATT.net and AOL.  On AOL the web and mail come up fine.   Under ATT connection,  although Outlook can access the internet to send and receive email,  IE cannot access the web. It says "cannot find server"
 
I've seen the same problem on the message boards and have visited Microsoft website. Per Microsoft website,  I have changed the Web Server HTTP settings and added IE to exceptions list on Windows Firewall.  Still not working.  Microsoft web talks about changing Winsock, and I've seen posting on this as well. Has anyone tried changing the Winsock and does it work?  can you give me steps.

Hi!!!

 as i was researching on to your issue, ideally after installing the service pack 2, u were unable to get the pages on to the internet, 

Winsock is 99% success,

Removing Winsock Settings

NOTE NOTE:You must have Administrative privileges in order to perform the steps below.

To remove Winsock settings, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start then Run

  2. Type regedit and click OK
    The Registry Editor window appears.

  3. Click the "+" to the left of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

  4. Click the "+" to the left of SYSTEM.

  5. Click the "+" to the left of CurrentControlSet.

  6. Click the "+" to the left of Services.

  7. Scroll down to locate the Winsock folder.

  8. Right-click on the Winsock folder and click Export.
    The Export Registry File appears.

  9. Save the file in My Documents as Winsock.reg.

  10. Right-click Winsock and click Delete.
    The Confirm Key Delete window appears.

  11. Click Yes.

  12. Right-click Winsock2 and click Export.
    The Export Registry File appears.

  13. Save the file in My Documents as Winsock2.reg.

  14. Right-click Winsock2 and click Delete.
    The Confirm Key Delete window appears.

  15. Click Yes.

  16. Restart the system.

Reinstalling Winsock Settings

After performing the previous set of instructions, perform the following steps:

NOTE NOTE:You must have Administrative privileges in order to perform the steps below.
  1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
    The Control Panel window appears.

  2. Double-click Network and Internet Connections.

  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and click Properties.
    The Network Connection Properties window appears.

  4. On the General tab click Install.
    The Select Network Component Type window appears.

  5. Click Protocol and click Add.
    The Select Network Protocol window appears.

  6. Click Have Disk.
    The Install From Disk window appears.

  7. Click Browse.
    The Locate File window appears.

  8. Click Desktop and double-click My Computer.

  9. Double-click Local Disk (C and double-click Windows or Winnt.

  10. Type INF in the File name and click Open.

  11. Click Open again.
    The Install From Disk window appears.

  12. Click OK.

  13. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click OK.
    The Network Connection Properties window appears.

  14. Click Close.

  15. Restart the system.

  16. Click Start, then click Run.

  17. Type netsh int ip reset delllog.txt in the Run line and click OK.

The Winsock settings have been successfully installed.

Nick please quit posting the same lame reply, if its that good post a link. It's not the answer to everyones problems. For sure if they can't install a service pack, they have no business in the registry. Even if you know what your doing one deleted entry and the comp could be inoperable. So please be helpful but don't advise them to get in the registry.

Hi!! Thanks for the reply, dude, this one option which works out successful, did u ever try it out, its not a harm, rather than getting the operating reinstalled after the frustrating service pack 2,

Its not a lame, but its a serious issue and when i come across this issue with my customer 99% it get resolved.

So hope its not burden,

Sam360, I'm not sure if it's a winsock issue but the safest way to go, if you're gonna go, is to use this program:

You're still messing with the registry.

Hey!!! thanks for that links...it should work this times. then getting into the registry, i didnt know there would be a program to fix this issue of winsock, what i keep working on is the long process to get into the registry.... :)
