re: filters.

DSL lines use spliters/filters which separate and keep the lower-freqency voice signals from interfering with [or being interfered by] the higher-frequency DSL tones... this way, a single phone line can be used, simultaneously, for computer/DSL-internet as well as making normal phone calls.

a filter must be placed between the DSL line, and EACH phone on the line.

for more information, see

I may be able to help with the cookies and hotmail.  When on the web go to tools (upper right hand corner) then go to internent options.  Click on the privacy tab and then on the sites button.  If you trust the website put the address in their and it will allow cookies through and should open the first time.  I have had to do this for a few discussion boards I have to access for school and I do not have any problems accessing them now.  Hope this helps.

Christine,

forgive my ignorance here... i don't know all the models... i'm assuming the inspiron 530 is a desktop??? --- yes?   [i'm basing this assumption on your statement that she doesn't have wireless.]

if so, she should be hard-wired [Ethernet cable] into the router [modem, or combined modem/router]... in which case, she should be continually "connected" to the AT&T ISP.

you wrote, "I figured out if the world isn't showing ..."

By "the world", I'm guessing you mean the Internet Explorer icon???  Or are you referring to something else?

Yes the Inspiron 530 is a desktop.  In Vista on the network 2computer icon on the task tay by the clock, apparently when you're connected it shows a globe/world picture on over it.  You're right, she should be continually connected.  But she's not.  She was on her old pc w/ Win ME.  All she had to do was click on IE on her desktop and she was in.  I don't know how the splitters/filters ATT is sending will help, since she had no trouble with her old system.

I have a 531, which is very similar to the 530.  It is a desktop.  I think the world is under the Network Detection in the lower right corner icon list.  When you click on the icon it shows the hardware connected, the network number and then a world globe.  The world globe represents the internet connection, and when mine is off it is grayed out and has an x over it.  I also have Vista and this sounds like a similar set-up.

ky331, I know what a filter is , but thanks for the pointer.

My questions are more to help the asker of the problem.

Its not only providing an answer which is helpful, but also educating the end user to understand their situation, and allowing them to help themselves down the line.

Volvogirl, you should have no difficulties gaining internet access vista or otherwise. It's instantaneous.

I believe your problem lies in the way you PC is communicating with your Internet Service Provider.

I would contact them to insure the setup is correct and then begin troubleshooting once that has been established.

If you can verify that your dsl provider has no internet access problems, check you cabling. then go to

Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network and Sharing center, View Network Status and Tasks, Then to Diagnose and repair, on the left hand side.

If that appears ok, try, Connect to a Network, or Setup a Connection or Network.

Hopefully that will help you.

Or if you run into something strange while diagnosing, or it doesn't work, post your results.

frank,

to clarify:  although my response may appear chronologically after yours in this thread, it was prepared for, and in direct response to, Christine's original post.

in all likelihood, we were both preparing our responses simultaneously, and yours posted 2 minutes ahead of mine.   I was completely unaware of your post --- and as such, its juxtaposition adjacent to yours should not be inferred as a reflection/commentary on your input here.

To Ky331,

Thank you for the explaination of filters.  I understood you were replying to me.

Just to make sure we fully understand the situation:

you're saying that your mother HAD a working DSL connection... that the ISP was/is AT&T, that she had the same router, but no filters... and everything was working fine while she was connected (hardwire/eithernet) to her older WinME system.

and the only thing that's actually changed is that she disconnected the ME system, and replaced it with the Vista system.

unless i've misstated something, then it seem the problem is not with the ISP nor DSL connection itself [though I wonder why they hadn't sent your mother the filters long ago --- I got mine as soon as I ordered DSL] ---

meaning we should focus for a solution within the Vista system itself.

As Frank suggested, I agree that a first step would be to check Vista's network connection.   Unfortunately, I don't use Vista, nor do i have access to a Vista system right now.   I'll mention the XP version, and hopefully, you'll be able to adjust, if needed, for Vista:

in Control Panel, Network Connections, you should find at least one (perhaps more) connection(s) listed.   for hardwire/eithernet DSL, the one she needs should be the "Local Area Connection".   the first step is to confirm this connection is listed, and enabled.  if disabled, then enable it [and this alone may make all the difference].   if it was already enabled, then, as frank suggested, you can further look into its status, to try to diagnose/repair any problem.

Yep you've got it.  I probably won't be going over till next week to try these steps out.  So I'll report back later.  But I recall I did try to diagnose and repair and nothing happened. But I'll look around some more.

Just thinking there might be a Vista setting or security setting, etc.  I got her a great deal $368 includes 3 year Trend Micro Pc-Cillin 14 and 3 year warranty + $30 for Vista Premium.  She already had a brand new monitor for her old pc.

Thanks,

i'll try to ask around and see what i can find out...

when you look into vista's security settings, be sure to check the firewall [assuming one is running] to see if has to allow the programs [like internet explorer] to have access to the internet.   (this is taking things to the extreme... i can't fathom that vista's built-in firewall would block IE... but who knows)

OK I'm over here now.  Looked all around at the settings.  Don't know what to select.  When I turn pc on it usually comes as 2 white computers w/ a red X while programs are starting up.  I think if I don't do anything at all and just wait it eventually turns into 2 blue computers w/ a yellow exclaimation point.  Seems to change to the exclaimation point after the HP Digital Imaging Monitor loads.
