Invisible saved jpg files.

jpg is the standard convention, the four letter "jpeg" is not a standard file extension and probably why you can't see them. 

JPC = JPEG-2000 Code Stream image format
JPE = JPEG Image
JPE = Mime: image/jpeg
JPE = Mime: image/pjpeg
JPEG = (MAC FILE TYPE) JPEG file

might try associating .jpeg with microsoft's photo editor

So how do I rectify that, seeing as 'jpeg' saves as default, and there is no option for saving as 'jpg'?

I have already tried changing the folder options. It didn't work.

when you save an image as .jpeg, in the save as window, under where you type the name of the image..should see save as type.  if you expand that to .jpeg extension...any .jpeg in that folder should show..Converserly..if save as type is showing .bmp, and you are typing name.jpeg, the window will still only show save as type files in that folder.

No I don't type in 'jpeg', it just appears as the default file extension. I have both 'jpeg' & 'bitmap' in the drop down of the 'save as' window.

For example. If I want to save a picture at say

http://www.lordoftherings.net/media/desktops/gollum_gollum_1280.jpg

Now the picture should save as 'gollum_gollum_1280.jpg'. Instead it saves as 'gollum_gollum_1280.jpeg', and the next time I go to save a another picture to that file, I can't see it. The only files I am able to see are files that have a 'jpg' extension.

The only way I have been able to correct this is to manually place my cursor between the 'e & the g, and delete the e: gollum_gollum_1280.jp g'.... Now next time I open the 'save as' window, I am able to see it. As I said, I never use to have this problem until recently, and I don't know what has made this problem happen.

Just type.jpg at the end of the file name in the save as window, i.e. filename.jpg

If fore some reason, the save as then adds .jpeg at the end, add "" around filename.jpg (i.e. type "filename.jpg"). However, as far as I know, the only program that adds an unwanted file extension by default is Notepad (adds .txt unless the filename and required extension are in quotes, e.g. filename.bat would be saved as filename.bat.txt, but "filename.bat" is saved as filename.bat).

What program is it you are using save as in? The ones I know of all have.jpg as an option (did you look through those dropdown box by save as type).

Yes, as I said. I can type in filename.Jpg and it works fine. The point is I shouldn’t have to. It is extremely time consuming, and very frustrating..

As for the program. I have tried Dell Image Expert, Paint Shop Pro 7, and PhotoShop Image.

Well, I'm quite familiar with Paintshop Pro (though admittedly I'm currently using version 8, I think that the save as options and behviour haven't changed from 7, except that additional file type JPEG 2000 has been added, but that is quite different: .jp2, .jpx, etc.) and if I choose 'save as  type' JPEG-JFIF compliant (.jpg, .jif, .jpeg), it adds .jpg directly in the filename box (for a new unnamed file it says Imagen.jpg (n is a number depending on how many unnamed images have been opened). Even if I delete all of that and type in a file name without extension, it puts the .jpg extension on when saving. In fact, to get it to save as a .jpeg type, I have to insert the e explicitly! I never had your problem with version 7 either, that behaved in exactly the same way as far as save as .jpg is concerned.

In paintshop pro, preferences (on file menu in 8, it may be on edit menu in 7, can't remember), file format associations, see whether JPEG-JFIF compliant (.jpg, .jif, .jpeg) is checked;  Maybe if you do that it will behave for you as it does for me, (although I tried the reverse, (unchecked, closed/reopened paintshop pro) and it made no difference).

So it's a mystery to me why you observe a different behaviour. I suppose that if for you four extra key strokes is 'extremely time consuming', then I can understand your frustration....

When i click on your link, and right click to save the fie.. i see .jpeg(*.jpg) and .bmp as the options.  When saving as .jpeg(*.jpg)  to the desktop , it is saving as gollum_golllum_1280.jpg
