I will have to try the microsoft page on a different day. Both links said page cannot be displayed. it also says that jvm is no longer available. Really confusing. Anyway, thanks for the help.

I have so far found one site that requires Microsoft VM JAVA , I switched my SUN JAVA to VM JAVA & then it worked OK.
You can have both SUN & Microsoft JAVA installed on IE Browser.

You can also get FREE Microsoft VM JAVA from
    http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html
get  ...86.exe file install then get   ...WU.exe file & install (WU= Windows Update)
    ------------------
With both installed to use SUN JAVA in IE , Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab scroll to Java & ticked SUN JAVA , leave VM ticked.
To use VM JAVA remove tick from SUN JAVA & only have VM "JIT compiler...." ticked.
In both cases to enable switch you must close IE Browser then re-open IE Browser.
The site already given will show the current version being used.
    If no JAVA being used it won't connect to site below;

Sorry , site used to have the files.
    Try this site https://mpsnet.com/mvision/java.html
    & click "Perform Version Test"
Never tried it , so might still work.?
If this site doesn't also auto install the Windows Update , you can use Windows Updates or Windows Catalog to get WU
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
    use Advanced Seach for VM.
    ----------------
    Edit:
    or try these sites
    http://web.iress.com.au/info/JavaVM.htm
    http://www.vrgraz.at/download/java/
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/javavmdownload.html  wait untill it auto starts download.
