JRosenfeld and others - EMC8 ?

Question

I'm getting that feeling in my stomach again that I may have thrown $60 away on this product after reading the Roxio board. My main reason for buying the app is to create CD's and print the front cover and tracklist insert for the case. Will this application enable me to do that fairly easily, or will I have to resort to using Surething along with a burner, like has been mentioned on the Roxio site several times?   I may use other functions of this suite later on, but CD burn and print are my main issues now. I used an lder version of Adaptec's Easy CD Creator (v.4 or 5, I think) that worked really well for me. I was expecting the same with this version, but it looks like there may be a good learning curve involved here.  Need some more info and direction if you can, please.   Thanks.

I have V7.5, son I can't realte directly to V8, however everything is straightforward with V7.5. I can access the Label Creator program by itself - don't need to have any other Roxio program running. The label creator program can import and list what songs are on a CD, as it has been able to do for a long time.

Same way with the CD recording functions - works just like older versions.

I have version 8 of Roxio Easy Media Creator and it does have some problems, but one of the areas that has worked fine is printing CD inserts, booklets, track lists etc. I have been using the Label Creator module to do this without and trouble. You can access this by going to start/all programs/ roxio emc8/ tools/ label creator.

There are a few things to learn and label creator has a few quirks, but once you get over that I have found that all the EMC 8 suite works very well.   The help centre in the software is not bad, but you can download a more extensive user manual from   http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=2243 (10.5MB pdf file)   There are also a few hotfixes posted on the Roxio forum, if you have specific problems.   Remember that most people who post questions on the users forum are the ones with problems; the ones without (the vast majority) don't usually post to say so. Thanks for all the insight, guys. It's all good information. I d/l'd the user manual in the link. I had already copied one down from the websire, but it wasn't as complete and informative as the one I got in the retail package. This one seems to be.

Is it best to go through Music Disk Creator to burn? I read on the Roxio forum that if done other ways may be risky. Can you also create CD case inserts for CD's NOT burned on EMC8?

I was gonna ask yet another question, but got it answered already. It had to do with performing a sound balance on all of the selected tracks prior to recording, and I found that this indeed is possible. Please excuse all the questions, and I AM reading the manual ... it's just some of the functions are confusing at this time.

If you are making a music CD, yes use Music disk creator. If you are making a data CD, use Creator Classic.   Yes you can use Label Creator for any music CD. If the CD has the track info, you can load it from the CD (or if commercial audio CD, it will most likely get it from the web), if not you can manually edit/add the track info, artist, CD title, etc. If you manually edit the tracks, don't be surprised if they all disappear wnen you exit the editor: that's one of the quirks I mentioned, with workaround on the Roxio forum.   If you want to you can also use label creator for any data CD, as you can manually add/edit/hide title, artist, track list, etc (you could use the track list box as a contents list).   Come to think of it, you don't even need a CD, if you just want to make a custom jewel case insert, all parts are manually editable :-).

Thanks guys for the replies. I burned a CD last night and it turned out fairly well, except I couldn't get the insert to list properly for label printing. I burned the cd, then tried to do the insert layout for front and back (I guess "back" is the selection where all the songs and artists/tracks list for the insert...or back of case), and it only brought forward the artist name and track time ... no song title. Could not find it for the life of me.

Prior to burning, it also flipped the artist and song title around so I had to spend time changing all that in the burn list window. What the heck is it with all of this stuff. They need to explain what each selection on these side panels mean if they aren't gonna use the exact name everyone's been used to using. Anyway, the cd turned out fine...just can't tell anybody what it is. :(

Another thing. When using Media Selector, why doesn't it show the total time as you add tracks to the burn list? Or did I miss that too. Thanks.

I think you would be better off posting these questions on the Roxio forum, lots of very experienced and friendly people there. However, I'll try to answer.   In Music disc creator, as you add tracks, at the bottom it gives estimated free time remaining, it also tells you the minutes on the disc you've inserted (usually 80 minutes) subtract one from the other to get approximate play time.   For custom music discs (i.e. where I select various tracks that may have come from different albums), I find it easier to edit the audio tags in Music Disc Creator (right click on a track, click edit audio tags). In project settings, make sure 'Add CD text' is checked. You can also edit the transition effects and durations. After burning the disc, insert it in your drive, then in label label creator use autofill from disc. What appears on the track list on the back of the insert is then the Title of each track that you put in the Music creator tag editor.   So edit the titles in Music Disc Creator to contain the info you want to appear on the back of the insert (for example, in making a CD of classical music by various composers, I add the composer name at the front of the track title; if recording songs sung by different singers and you want their names to appear for each track on the back of the insert, add the names to the Title in Music disk creator).     The Artist entry shown in Music Disc Creator should appear in a text box on the front of the insert in label creator, though if there are different artists on different tracks it may only show the one of the first track, in which case you can edit that text box in label creator to add the others.   You can also set the album title in Music disc creator, it will appear on the front of the insert.     Message Edited by JRosenfeld on 08-09-200603:35 PM

When burning music CD's (standard audio CD's not MP3's) you must use 'Disk at once' and 'CD Text' if you want the song names on the burned CD.

Thanks folks. Didn't really mean to belabor this thread and your working knowledge, when using the product will shake these things out in due course, I hope. My thoughts were that questions that were answered from a user may be a little more understandable, rather than the tech assuming I already knew something.
