KB 810608 for installation issue

I'm having trouble understanding WHAT exactly am I supposed to type for?

Look up KB 810608 and read the solution instructions. It says:

"1. Click Start, click Run, and then type CMD. Click OK.
2. To change to the root folder of drive C, type cd\, and then press ENTER.
3. Insert the Windows XP CD, type Expand cd_drive_letter:\i386\filename.tl_ drive:\Windows\system32\filename.tlb, and then press ENTER, where filename is the name of the file that you want to expand and drive is the letter of the drive where Windows is installed.

For help with the Expand command, type EXPAND /? at a command prompt."

I know I need to get to the file(s) Stdole32, stdole2, and stdole. I'm just having a struggle understanding the instructions. Even the help on the expand command is just as confusing.

help?

I didn't read the KB article, but this is what you need in the CMD box (copy/paste) :

Expand C:\i386\Stdole32.tl_ C:\Windows\system32\Stdole32.tlb

You can edit the above for the other 2 files. Note the space between _ C if you type them in.

it's a bit confusing...

so what you're saying is that I could type in stdole 2 in the "system" folder, NOT the "system32" folder as I've done for other two files.

correct?

lmb59,

Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive. Go to Start|Run, enter cmd and press . At the command prompt, substituting the letter of your CD-ROM drive for X, enter the following:

expand X:\i386\stdole32.tl_ c:\windows\system32\stdole32.tlb
expand X:\i386\stdole2.tl_ c:\windows\system32\stdole2.tlb
expand X:\i386\stdole.tl_ c:\windows\system32\stdole.tlb

Press at the end of each line and you should see a statement that the file has been expanded. After you have finished all three lines type exit and . Note that there is a space after tl_.

I've typed in the expansion for both stdole32 and stdole.

However, stdole2 triggers an error: "can't open output file: c:\windows\system32\stdole2.tlb"

so I'm stuck...? I made sure I typed in this:

expand d:\i386\stdole2.tl_ c:\windows\system32\stdole2.tlb

waiting for your answer(s)

edit: do I *need* all of the files to work? in the KB, it says that this issue may occur if ONE OR MORE of the following files are missing from the Windows\System32 folder.

Don't know if this helps.
On my non-dell machine, stdole32.tlb & stdole2.tlb are in the c:\windows\system32 folder.
Stdole.tlb is in the c:\windows\system folder and the c:\windows\system32\dllcache  folders.

lmb59,

Take a look in the system32 folder. That error may indicate that stdole2.tlb is already present.

checked the system32 folder, and yep, all 3 files are in there. (they don't have the .tlb extension...that's ok?)

thanks!
