Laptop won't boot missing file

Hello there I'm running Win XP Pro on an Inspiron 6400 I was burning a CD and it completed just fine. When it was done I got an error message. I shut the laptop off and tried to reboot. It won't boot I get a message right away that says:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please reinstall a copy of the file.
I do have the XP CD and the Dell CD's that came with the laptop. Could anyone help me reinstall the needed file.
I'm not by any means a computer wiz but I can work my way through if explained to me in simple terms.
Thank you for any help. Alan

Well I'll give this a try.
Will there be a way after I get this installed that I'll be able to take a snapshot and store it in the recovery part of the computer for future use?

Only if you buy a program like this

Acronis True Image is an excellent program which many of us use.

The Symantec Restore you had before was a one-off from Dell

The program creates a ghost image which you burn to CD/DVD.  Much safer than a "Recovery Partition"  which can get damaged as you have found out :smileysad:

I've got most of everything installed but I'm having a hard time getting a driver for my wireless adapter to work. My BIOS simply says Intel Wireless. So I've tried the Intel Wireless adapter driver but it isn't working. I also tried the Dell_Wireless driver because I am sure I had two wireless icons in the task bar before. It doesn't work either. Also my video driver doesn't want to load I come up with an error say one or more of the components are missing. I have a Radeon 1300 card and I don't show a driver for that but I tried a couple different drivers and get the same message each time. I'm just not sure what I'm missing. I figured if I can get my wireless adapter working I can come on here and have the driver download part of this site look at my system and recommend the latest and greatest drivers for me. But I need to get the wireless adapter working.
That program you suggested (for a snapshot) will work after I've got everything set up and working properly?

Wireless adapter

Right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager
Click the + at Network Adapters
You will get the full name here and then go to Intel to search for the latest driver, or Google for it.

Do the same in DEvice Manager for your Video card

That is EXACTLY how it is meant to work.  Making the ghost image (snapshot) actually takes a while to run, and then you should use the option on the opening page to check the image before you burn it.  This will take the same amount of time but is worth doing to ensure the image has been made properly.

When I go to the device manager under hardware it's strange the Network Adapters doesn't have an "!" or "?" it looks like it's ok but under "other devices" it's full of Yellow "!" and "?". That tab consist of Base System Device (there's 3 of those), Network Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible) Can there be a driver selection I've not noticed on this Dell Reinstallation disk?

Ok progress is being made. I've got the wireless working.

At this point all I see that's not right is in the hardware device manager under the "other devices" it has yellow in the base system device. I clicked on them thinking with internet now it would identify the needed drivers but I get a message saying something to the point of "wizard unable to identify needed software".

And on boot up I get an error message from ATI Radeon Mobility x1300. "cli.exe application error 0xc0000135" I googled it and found a couple things pertaining to that but I didnt' find the cure. Some people talked about installing a patch from ATI but I didn't find it for my system. Any ideas?

The good news is I feel the end is near...lol...

Oh boy, we are getting there :smileyhappy:

Device Manager/Base System Device
Could this be a card reader?  Maybe an  in-built SD card reader. If you have one it might be the Ricoh R5C832  that you need.  Have another look on the Dell downloads page.

ATI Radeon error
I Googled it too and it looks like you need  .NET Framework

Download the .NET Framework then uninstall the video drivers from Device Manager (I`m not sure if you have drivers installed yet or not)
Reboot
Install .NET Framework and they try to install the video drivers again

Now Alan, if this does not solve the video problem I think you will have to post in the appropriate forums.  I`m not too hot on ATI problems.

NOTE
I hope you are saving all these drivers to CD for the next time:smileywink:

Hope this helps though

The Ricoh was the ticket. Thank you for sending me in the right direction.

And uninstalling the Radeon driver and installing the .net framework then reinstalling the Radeo did the trick as well. I read last night about the .net framework but I must of misunderstood what I read I just didn't put it together that that was the fix. (Lapse or brain dead I don't know...lol...)

Anyhow it looks like everything is up and running I thank you very much for your time and help.

I've got just two quick questions if I may.

1st) When I go to my computer I see a drive "D Backup" I don't remember seeing that before maybe it was there I just don't remember it. Anyway it shows 16.5GB there is no data at all on it. Is that where my restore program was supposed to have been?

2nd) Is that where I should put my snap shot using Acronis True Image? I see there is a version 11 out now do you know if it is greatly improved over version 10. New Egg has a pretty good price on version 10.

Again thank you very much for all your help.

 "D Backup"

I really don`t know what that could be/have been.  Sounds like it was always there due to the size of it.  The "Restore" partition is usually hidden and I think it would only have been around 4 or 5GB. Reinstalling XP from the CD would probably have wiped it out anyway.

Have a look here
Right click My Computer/Manage
Click Disk Management on the left hand side. You will see exactly how the disk is partitioned.

Acronis
You can store the disk image in that other partition, but I advise you to burn it to DVD/ CDs too.  If the hard drive fails you will not be able to access the image on the hard drive.

NOTE
You must decide whether you want to burn the image to CDs or a DVD.  The image will be far too big for a CD and will have to be spread over a few.  In order to do this properly you need to watch out for a page in Acronis with an option to split the image into chunks.  It will do this in such a way as to enable the final CDs to be entered in the CORRECT order during a restore.(Number them when you burn them).  Tell Acronis to split the image into sizes which will fit on a CD (maybe 500 MB).  Don`t forget to check the image

Acronis 11 is new and I can`t comment on it.  I have Acronis 10 and it works well for me.  I`d just go with it if you are getting a good price.

I`m happy to help you and am glad to see you have everything working now. :smileyhappy:

It shows a partition there. Looking back at what I did I remember that I did a back up from the tools utility. Instead of doing just a back up of documents and settings I did a back up of all information on this computer it says it will create a system recovery disk to restore the system in case of a failure. It didn't prompt me to install any CD's so maybe it made a partition? I don't know. But it doesn't show anything on it. Oh well maybe I'll use it for storage away from the OS.

I'm going to get the Acronis program. I can see it would save a couple hours time and frustration.

I did burn all my drivers that were current as of this round of troubles to a CD just in case.

Anyhow have a good day.
Thank you
Alan
