Latitude E5510 not booting after installing Windows 7 64 bit

Hey all,

I have recently tried installing Windows 7 on my brother's laptop to try to upgrade it from Vista. The install went well, but when it tries restarting for the first time, the screen stays blank without booting. I've tried formatting the drive and trying again and still nothing.

Any idea what it could be?

Hi Silas,

My apologies for delayed response.

You can check the SATA Operations in system BIOS. Change the SATA Operations from AHCI to ATA or vice versa as shown in image below:

Also please make sure to remove all the external peripherals connected to your computer and remove the SD card from the slot if connected.

See if it makes any difference.

Hi Silas,

You can run a diagnostic test on your computer to see if it is an issue with hard drive:

  • Please restart the system.
  • As soon as you see the blue Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F12’ key on top of the keyboard.

Note: If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.

  • After you tap ‘F12’ key, a new window would appear in front of you. Use the 'Down' arrow key to highlight the option “Diagnostics” and hit Enter
  • Make a note of error code if any.

If the hardware diagnostics pass, you can try performing a clean installation of Operating system. Before you proceed, I will advise you to take a complete backup of your data (pictures, music, applications, videos, documents) if possible, as this step leads to complete data loss. Remove all the external peripherals (like printers, scanners, any USB device except keyboard and mouse) connected to your computer. For more information and steps related to Operating system re-installation, you can refer to link:  http://dell.to/Vl76iI

Another step that you can try is to disable the TPM security from BIOS by following the steps below:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as you see the Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F2’ key on top of the keyboard.
  • If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.
  • After this a new window would appear. Navigate to the 'Security' option.
  • Load Defaults and Uncheck box for TPM.

  • Save changes and restart your computer.

Please share the findings.

Could it be that I need a driver to install windows 7? I'm looking at the list of drivers for the laptop service tag and I don't know what to do. I have 4 options for OS deployment, but none of them have much of a description about what theyre for.

After running all of those tests, everything passed. I've tried reinstalling windows 7 twice now with the same results. I tried disabling TPM security, but it was already disabled at the BIOS.

Whenever I install windows, it finishes without any errors or anything and tries to restart for the first time. When it restarts, it makes it past the Dell logo, but then just sits there with the text cursor blinking in the corner. It doesn't anything else. I've made sure that it's booting from the hard drive, it just won't start.

Load the latest Intel SATA Driver during the setup and also try to use media that has service pack included. See this guide here for more details:

I was able to solve the issue by setting the SATA controller to AHCI -_- Thanks!

You have to do a clean install.  The upgrade will not work

I had a rather similar difficulty whereby upon reimaging a new E 5510 machine, I got the blue screen of death.

Inside the bios ➤ system configuration ➤ I changed the SATA from RAID to AHCI. I rebooted the system and it did the trick.
