Depends who you ask . . . any P2P software comes with risks. It's a "caveat emptor" philosophy. Do you leave your car unlocked when you park it? Same idea.
I would also suggest you do a search for Limewire on the Virus/Spyware board to see the comments about this software. You'll get some really good advice there.
There is a feature in Limewire to check the file before you download it. Right click on the file and hit Advance> Look up with Bitzi. This is a user web page that tells what other users have said about it. You can Join Bits and download the program so you can give you opinion on it. Always scan any file you d/l with a virus checker.
In addition to being potentially UNSAFE, Limewire being a P2P program gives one the ability to share copyrighted material, which is illegal. While some may share copyrighted material anyway, it's good to understand the legal liability that one exposes themselves to. If the violator is a minor, he/she is exposing their parents to legal action from the copyright owner.
Translation - if a kid illegally copies music files, the parent gets fined/punished if the kid is caught... :smileywink:
Countless times I've had to reformat computers for friends or family that bogged down due to using PSP programs such as Limewire or Kazaa. You expose your computer to viruses, and you are taking a risk everytime you open up a file, even if its a music file. Just because something is called by the proper name when you choose, doesn't mean thats what your going to get. I have also seen where the internet security system actually has recognized and blocked a potential harm to your computer, yet it has managed to slow it down some how. Just last week, I formatted a computer that had no icons on the desktop, hardly no files on the Start menu and the C drive would not open. This person was downloading music files. Then you deal with the tracking cookies, malware and spyware associated when you use these programs.
Live the risky life and download from these sites. Otherwise, stay away from them.
a torrent site like
www.demonoid.com is better than limewire but it has risks as well in order to use demonoind you will have to download a torrent program like
www.utorrent.com
