Local Area Connection Gone After Reinstall

I had a remote user complaining of a software problem call Dell and the support man told him to reinstall Windows XP.  Now we have logged him into the OS but his Local Area Connection is not listed in the Network Connections.  How can I fix this?

Did you install all necessary drivers.  You don't say which model computer is involved (always useful information), but on most newer computers the chipset drivers need to be installed first, followed by the video drivers, network drivers, sound drivers, and modem drivers.

Thank you.  I am sorry, I am not used to using forums.  The user is on a Latitude X300.  He didn't have a driver disk so Dell was sending one out.  I will try your suggestion when it arrives, although I have seen this on other X300s and drivers did not fix this.  Usually a reinstall does.

Note that all drivers can be downloaded by clicking on the Product Support tab in the upper left of the Dell forum Window.

After I reinstalled my windows xp home edition I could not find the local area connection in my network. I think that my rj-45 port in the back of my desktop is not working properly but I don't know how to fix it. I tried installing all the drives from the resource CD but nothing helps. I have a Dimension 2400.

First note that you are responding to a post that is nearly a year old - in the future, start a new thread, rather than replying to old threads.

After reinstalling Windows you must install drivers for your devices.   It is extremely important that the first drives installed are the chipset drivers.   You can download all drivers for your system at the following site:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_CEL_2400&os=WW1&osl=EN

Again you must install the chipset drivers first.   The drivers for your integrated ethernet network interface card will be under Network.   It is the Broadcom device.   It is likely that you will also need to install drivers for your sound card (Audio Devices) and video card (Video Adapter) as well.
