Logging Off Works, but it's real slow.

Question

Dimension 2400 Series. Recently having problems logging out, switching to another user or Logging Off or Shuting Down, No changes in Software or Hardware. Normally when I went to log off for a User it would take a few seconds. I am now experiencing several minutes to almost 5 minutes or more to Log Off, Switch Users or Shut Down. I am Administrator and have two other Users.  I tried this which I found at www.maximumsoftwaresupport.com:  Disabling the Terminal Services service: Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Service | Disable Terminal Services  (required in Windows XP for running Remote Assistance, Fast user Switching, and in XP Pro, Remote Desktop. you have lots of spyware/malware on the computer. i would download and run ad-aware on the computer ans well and microsoft antispyware. if you are nto using any virus scan you may also want to purchase some and install it on the computer. another thing you may want to try is to disable all startup items in MSconfig. to get to MSconfig go start - run and type MSconfig. the system configuration window will open and choose the startup tab. in the startup tab choose disable all then ok and it will ask you to restart the computer .  disabling these will not affect your computer from being able to load windows. It just allows the computer to start or stop all/some of the programs that starts near the time/clock in windows.  if this works you may want to start to enable some of the startup items again untill you find what one is causing you to change users slowly.

For starters, if you uncheck everything on that tab you will no longer have antivirus protection. Scan for spyware as recommended and if the problem is not resolved, disable startup items one at a time to see if you can identify which one (if any) is causing the problem.

Do you routinely run disk cleanup and periodially defrag the hard disk?

I have Norton AntiVirus. I will try the MSConfig as you suggest. What can I lose?

Yes, I did try this and it seems to be working: Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services, Disabled Terminal Services Shutdown time was 2-5 minutes - now it is back to 10-15 seconds. Found this fix on www.maximumsoftwaresupport.com

I spent tons of time with this . My system starting slow shut down / logoff with 4 user accounts after I hooked up a wireless router (SMC) . Running Norton Internet Securit and PEst PAtrol (all updated ) ALso updated XP to SP2 to see if that would help. No.   However, Norton has a good help article on this since I kept on seeing CCapp program not responding on logoff / shutdown (this is Norton.)   see http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005110811012639   You will need to logon to EACH user account and follow this instruction each time. Each user account will have differnt settings under its MSCONFIG.   After I did this, and told XP to stop reminding me that I changed the setting (again disable the message after you log back on to each usre account.) XP is working very quick. BUT, I have a suppor question in to Microsoft discussion forums ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter ) asking if there is an easier user interface to set these parameters or if XP is smart enough to know to wait for ALL loaded apps to shut down b4 XP trys to ( this is the universal problem on slow shut downs....)   Try the Norton article out. It is worth the time .
