I'm having a similar problem on my XPS 710 with Vista Ultimate. Every once and a while, the shutdown hangs. I can actually predict when this is going to happen, since the Task Manager reports the CPU operating at 50%, even though none of the processes listed seems to be responsible for the CPU usage. Anyway, when I use a hard shutdown, the Intel RAID utility starts next time I start Windows, and it takes forever to "repair and verify" (and it slows the system down considerably in the process). Next time it happens, I'll try to cancel the verification and see what happens. I wish I knew what was causing the hang in the first place, though.
i have recently bought a INSPIRON 1525with VISTA HOME PREMIUM its been just third day today.
The laptop didnt give any problem with first shut down, but the second time itsbeen abject , the vista hangs up at Logging off screen and is in that state from past 48 hours.
please can you tell me what should i do with this new laptop of mine.
I bought my laptop 2 weeks ago, Inspiron i1525-139BI have only had it on about 5 times. Now it will not come on, When I turn it on it goes thru "resuming windows" then a screen comes on and says "Logging Off" I am very upset. I cannot figure out why it is doing this. I need to get it up and running. Any suggestions....This is my first laptop, I am only used to Windows XP. Is this an on going problem with Inspiron or Vista??? Should I take it back to where I bought iot "Best Buy" and see if they can fix it?? thanks, barbind

I have a similar problem with my XPS 420 using VISTA. If you run itunes, try this before shutting off or restarting:
Click "START"
Enter: Services.msc
Find: "Ipod Services" in the list
Right click and then click on "STOP"
Then turn off your machine.
If you change your mind, restart itunes by clicking on its icon or through the Start Menu.
It will restart automatically (assuming that's how yours is set up), when you log on again.
Good Luck!

Found another way to do it. Start Task Manager
click on processes.
Find "iTunesHelper" and put the pointer on it
Right click
Find "End Process" and click on it.
This does the trick too and is a bit easier to find.
