M65 DVD-R Issue: The specified path does not exist

Brand new M65 (B9VLX91) with DVD-R burner, XP Pro (SP2), 1GB RAM, i.e. fairly loaded. While installing a CAD program (Vellum 3.0), I get the following message:

D:\Vellum Install\SETUP.EXE
The specified path does not exist.

Check the path, and then try again.

I've previously installed this program on other Precision machines (650 and 470) and recently tried to see if I got the same message on my lowly Dimension $700 special (XP Home) on both the basic CD-Rom it came with, and the Panasonic DVD burner I added. I also tried to verify it on my other lowly Inspiron 4000 (with Win 2K). The only system that gives me the error is the M65. I have no problem with drive letters, Explorer clearly shows D:\ as the DVD-R/CD drive and the file shown above exists.

The crazy part is I have installed other programs (SolidWorks for example) w/o a problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks,
Troy

I had this problem while trying to run the install for Office 97 on a Latitude D620.  Found this thread, unfortunately uninstalling Embassy suite is not an option as we want to use the TPM features.  My "work around" was to select the install setup.exe and right click, do "Run As.." and ran as Administrator (I was already logged into an account with administrative rights, however running it as a seperate user seemed to allow me to install).

Hope Dell comes up with a solution for this as we will probably be looking at ordering more of these systems and the Embassy Suite/TPM are supposed to be security features so disabling them is kind of a waste.

I have talked with Dell. They are already aware of the issue. There is a fix that involves removing only part of the security software. Check with the security software company website.

The user removing part of the software is a Work Around. The fix is for Dell to get FIXED software to install on new systems and for existing users to install a patch.

I dont know about you, but not being able to TRUST security software seems to be a streach to me.

I'm aldo not very impressed by Dells response to this, either.

Same Problem on M90
Trying to run setup.exe for VS6 SP6 on a Dell Precision M90 with WUXGA
display (1920 x 1200, 32 bit colour) under WinXP Pro.
Program would not start, with error message
   "Specified Path does not Exist"
Copying files to hard drive, double clicking exe, using the Start, Run dialog
etc - all made no difference.
Solution.
Fix was to run Start, All Programs, Accessories, Program Compatibility Wizard,
then choose
   Locate program manually,
   No compatibility,
   256 Colors,
when the SP6 ran OK.

So, in other words they don't intend to fix their buggy software and Dell continues to install known buggy software.

As a software QA guy from way back, it is not what I would call a first class operation! I junked the whole suite (after doing some research on what it's purpose was). Security is, after all, about trust.

Thanks Larry -- this is definitely the answer -- I have an M90 with same problem.  I used "disable video themes" and all is now working fine!

I had the same problem on my D820 with the path not found for some old windows programs. I have executed the uninstall work around from Wave as described in article DM-010. After that I get the following errors in my System Event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None

The NTRU Hybrid TSS v2.0.7 TCS service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).

So i'm afraid the original problem is solved, but I has created a new one. How do I resolve this one (without creating another)???

I have installed a new version of Broadcom Trusted Platform Mod v1.2, Embassy Trust Suite upgraded from 1.00.007 to 1.1.1 (R131562.EXE) (and the Document Manager installed again - reverse article DM-010 rev 1.00) and after that the problems were vanished.

I hope this will help you too.

It is very strange that Dell nor Wave can tell us that installing the new version solves the problem

CVooren:

Did you get your "The NTRU Hybrid TSS v2.0.7 TCS service hung on starting" problem fixed?

I am having the same problem since I upgraded to the latest TPM software on the Dell support site. I had to upgrade to make the Wave software respond after loading IE7.

Now my TPM chip does not function and boot-up time has increased at least 2 minutes.

I called Dell and I know more about the TPM than they do. I then called Wave, and they are supposed to call back someday...

R131562 is where my problem started.

I installed IE7, which up my older Wave software. It more or less would freeze whenever I went to the Embassy Security Center.

I noticed R131562 said it fixed the IE7 compatibility problem, so I installed it.

Now the Wave software works with IE7, but my TPM chip won't function. It has something to do with the NTRU service failing.

If I manually try to start the NTRU service, it give me this error:
Could not start the NTRU Hybrid TSS v2.0.25 TCS service on Local Computer.
Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe there is a solution out there somewhere.

D820user
I use IE7 also, from start RC1 and now first release but no problems. The NTRU service runs without problems after R131562. But I must tell you I'm not using the Embassy Trust Suite yet. So I have no experince with performe of that.

Didn't see this in the thread. Per the InstallSite forum, for 16-bit apps try running from a command.com box (yes DOS lives): Start-->Run app. My box is a D820 and this worked for me. Please stop saving us from ourselves.

Just to bring matters up to date, after I thought all was well, another bug came up. Hyperterm connection to a remote serial device (I have to do this sort of thing at work) would get a page fault about 10 seconds after connecting. Anyway, I took a deep breath and uninstalled the entire security suite. Problem fixed. My M-65 seems to run faster now, too.

what I specifically did was:

1) I set my display to 1024x768

2) Run->All Programs->Accessories->Program Compatibility Wizard

In the PgmCompatWiz I selected the "I want to locate this program manually"

I ran this successfully on both a local copy and a network share.

At first, I thought it had something to do with the screen size (it still may), but now I'm not so sure.

Anyway the PgmCompatWiz worked for me...

This is most definatly a Dell/M65 issue.

You are a life saver.  I was trying to install an older  (1999) educational science program by Glencoe publishers on a D820.  I got the setup.exe path cannot be found error.  It has been installed on numerous other computers running XP with no issues, including D810s and D800s.  The Program Compatability Wizard worked.  Thanks for posting this.

Also, after reading further in the thread, I checked the computer for the Embassy Security Suite...and of course it was there.  This would be the only model of computer that we have the Security Suite on.  I'm guessing it may have contributed to the fact that I could install the program on any other computer but the D820.   What a pain!
