Managing Photos

I've been a Windows user for years; a Windows 2000 Professional user for about 7 or 8 years.  My purchase of a laptop included Vista.  I've found a lot to like about it, but it's almost like learning German or....

I imported 3,000+ photos from an external hard drive to my laptop.  Vista put them all in one folder.  I've figured out how to create new folders.

BUT, I can't figure out how to move selected imported photos to new folders.

Help.

Thanks,

Gene; Welcome to DCF

I would suggest to go into the folder with 3k of pics.... arrange them by a category first.

Then select the ones you want to go into a particular folder by right clicking on the first one .... then either use Shift-Control and click on the last one in a group or use the long way and hold Ctrl key and click on each photo individually until you selet all that you want to go in a particular folder.....

> now, right click in the group on any pic and click "cut" and then go into the destination folder, right click inside that folder and click "paste"   ,,,, in other words the old cut/paste trick will work.

repeat this procedures for all groups of photos and destination folders until done.

After you are done with this, go into each folder and "tag" all the photos with something familiar or as simple as the name of the destination folders you have created.... that way the next time you can use tags to find and organize your pictures..... you could also use multi tags for your pics, that way they could be arranged into more than one folder.....  Good Luck

Peace

If your version of Vista has Windows Photo Gallery, use that to organize your photos. I know it is included with Home Premium, but I'm not sure about Basic. Check your Start menu to see if you have it.

MoneyGuyBK,

Thanks for the welcome.  Tried your suggestion.  Right clicking doesn't give a "cut" or "move" option.  The only option even close is "copy"; it doesn't seem to do anything, doesn't provide a destination.  Who knows where the copied items went?

I have Vista Premium.  Anymore suggestions?

Mary G,

I'm new to this forum.  Can you read my post to MoneyGuyBK?  I told him I have Vista Premium.  Life would be much simplier if MicroSoft had left about 90% of their screens alone.  As previously mentioned, some of the things Vista does is a real improvement, but it's like learning a new language.

Thanks for your response.

Gene.... here's something you might want to download and install:

Add Copy To / Move To to the Windows Explorer Right Click Menu

This little how-to allows you to add the hidden functionality back... afterwards simply right click on a file and either have it moved to a different location or leave it where it is and copy it to another location.

* Disclaimer: Be careful whenever you edit the Registry !!!

Maybe this will work and give you some of the functionality you are used to from beore ;)

Peace

Thanks, MoneyGuyBK.  I'm like the cowardly lion when it comes to the registry.  I think I'll just go back to a commercial s/w pkg.
