Missing text in Msconfig - config.sys file?

Hi,

A recent computer crash resulted in a unuseable harddrive.  Have lost nearly 17 gigabytes of files.  Got newer harddrive and tried several times to install OS WIN98 without an error-less install.  Some files are missing and some errors pop up on start up, others show up when I try to install upgrades to reinstalled software.

I checked the msconfig folder and found that no text was present in the 'Config.sys' tab in msconfig.  I believe that test of some sort was present prior to my harddrive meltdown.  A startup error message appears on initial boot, but it quickly disappears.  How do I put in text into the config.sys file, if it is needed and what exactly do I type?  Where might I find information on this matter?

I tried unsuccessfully to load an upgrade to WIN98, same thing happened when I tried to install WIN98SE and I got the following error message: pertaining to not enough free conventional memory.  I have not been able to understand exactly what I need besides a lot of help.

System:

1998 Dell xps r400 PII upgraded to PowerLeap PIII/1.4GHz; Running WIN98 with hopes of upgrading to WIN98SE; 384mb RAM; CD-DVD ROM drive; CD-RW drive; Maxtor ATA/133 card for 160GB harddrive (was Maxtor 30GB)

Anyone with any logical ideas would be welcome!!

parkpointer,

Windows 98 requires neither a config.sys nor an autoexec.bat file (unless you are running DOS applications).

You should be able to resolve the error message relating to free memory by running scandisk on the hard drive using the emergency boot floppy diskette.

Denny D,

In Autoexec.bat, I found references to the following: Adobe Photo D, Norton ghost, Sound Blaster, and something referred to as ASP4DOS.COM.

Could you please explain how I'd check to see what if any programs are running in DOS as opposed to Windows?

I have unchecked everything in 'Config.sys', but do not know what 'Autoexec.bat' does, and am unsure of what to do there.

Thanks for your expertise, it is greatly appreciated!!
