Mouse frozen at log in screen

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 210 running Windows 7 home edition.

My mouse cursor is frozen in the center of the screen when Windows boots up, preventing me from being able to log in to windows.  I have tried 3 different mice, and every USB port on the box, and the cursor remains frozen in that same spot no matter how many times I reboot.  The keyboard seems to work, since I can move around and type in the bios.

Is there a way to log in to windows without using a mouse?  How do I access the windows setup files that are on the partitioned hard drive that came with my computer, you know, instead of Windows 7 installation disks?

Thanks.

Hi Kryptik0

I would suggest you to check the system in Safe Mode with Networking, follow the below mentioned steps:

  • Restart the computer.
  • Tap during startup until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Press until Safe Mode with Networking is highlighted, and then press .

After that open device manager and right click mice and other pointing device and select uninstall. Restart your system and check again.

Please reply me if you need any further help.

Thanks & Regards

Yes I can boot up to safe mode, and I have the same problem.  The mouse cursor is frozen at the log in screen.  That means I cannot click on my username to log in to windows.  In safe mode or otherwise.  The mouse cursor will not move.  Is there a way to get into windows without using a mouse?

I cannot log in to windows.  I cannot log in to windows in Safe Mode because I cannot log in to windows.  Because the mouse does not work.  I hit F12 went into the diagnostics, oddly enough my mouse works fine in that screen.  I went through all the diagnostic checks, everything checked out fine.  Even the mouse test showed it passed.  No hard drive problems either.  But the problem remains.  The mouse cursor is frozen at the log in to windows screen.  I have tried 3 different mice, I've tried every USB port on the computer, I have rebooted dozens of times.  Nothing helps.  I think I need to reinstall windows, but I don't have a disk.  The setup files are on a partitioned section of the hard drive, I do not believe Dell ever sent me a disk for this computer.  If they did, it is long lost.

Hi Kryptik0

It seems to be an issues with the operating system as you have mentioned mouse was working fine in F12. I would recommend you to restore the operating system back to factory settings. Please note restoring the original factory image erases all existing data. This includes files, folders, programs, drivers, E-mails, photos. Before performing a PC Restore, back up all personal files. If you do not back up your personal files, the data will be lost.

Please click on the below mentioned link that might help you:

I saw this a few days ago on an XP machine; found myself  doing a CTRL/Shift/Esc and it freed up the mouse. Don't know why but it worked. Can't hurt to try it.
