mouse not working after installing service pack 2

My computer is a Dell Dimension DIM 4600C. My mouse does not work after I installed service pack 2. I do not have original discs to computer. I just started here and no one can find the discs that came with computer! What shall I do?

Please look on the bottom of the mouse and see if it has a name.  Then we can try and find a possible driver.

The only thing it says on the bottom is Dell.

There are no mouse drivers for generic mice on the 4600C download site, as these are built into XP.  It sounds like the only remedy may be to buy a new mouse, which is very inexpensive.  But honestly, I don't know why the old mouse doesn't work. You did check the connection at the plug end, right?

You could try a PS/2 to see how it works . . In Device Manger . . do any of the USB devices show up with a yellow !

Right click on it and select Uninstall . . reboot and windows should reload the driver

I have one that has yellow - Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller   Do I delete it and then how do I reinstall?

In Device Manager . . look at the Universal Serial Bus Controller ( usually the last on the list ) to see if any have the yellow ! . . if so, you could try uninstalling them and rebooting to see if windows will reinstall the USB drivers

You could try reinstalling the chipset drivers . . Hover over Product Support at the top left of this page, select Drivers & Downloads, navigate to drivers for your model.  If it shows separate USB drivers update, do those, otherwise, use the chipset drivers
