MS04-032 patch and BSOD with GX-110/150 running Win2K

There are reports of problems with this patch, I'm assuming it's related to the Intel 810/815 video chip, but, not sure...

We had three GX-150s (Win2000) displaying the "unexpected kernel mode trap" this morning....has anyone else encountered similar issues?  The systems are set to automatically load Windows updates

If you remove the update KB840987 the machine will then start, but if you have automatic updates loaded you will get the same thing next time.  I tried the new bios but that didn't work.  Anyone come up with something more??

We've confirmed your findings that removing the MS 04-032 (KB840987) patch allows our GX-150 systems to boot normally.  We wondered if a new video driver might help, but the latest video drivers for our GX-150s date from 2001 so we don't expect any joy there.

Thanks for the BIOS tip...one step we won't have to try :-)

Try the Intel version 6.7 video driver (support.intel.com).

Main problem we've been seeing today is with GX-260, ntoskrnl error, but, a reboot fixes...

Loaded the Intel 6.7 video driver on a test GX-150 (without the MS 04-32 patch loaded) gave us a BSOD (unexpected kernel mode trap)...same result when we loaded the patch.  Removed the patch (safe mode). Attempted to reload the original video drivers....same BSOD results.

Hmmmmm...

I have several servers that I upgraded last night, only my two (Win2k server) PowerVault 725N servers had issues.  The same thing listed earlier here, -trap error- blue screen.

I was able to boot up in safe mode and remove the following hotfixes

- KB834707
-KB841356
-KB840987
-KB841533
-KB824151

CPU was clocking hard durning most of it so do be patient and let it finish, im back up and running now.

FYI: The I'm still experiencing the problem with the latest BIOS update (version A10).

Has anyone had different results with the BIOS patch?

Unfortunately I havent been able to do any sort of testing since I rolled back the updates.  These servers are needed for daily stuff by my users..  :(

We rolled back the 840987 Security Update (MS04-032) on the affected GX-150 machines (they now boot w/o kernel trap & endless boot cycling) and are continuing to search the internet for any leads how to correct the issues - no joy yet.

I just put in a support request with Dell (referencing this discussion).   We'll see if they respond (and obviously, I'll post the response).

We seem to NOT be having problems with the 110/150, but, have had several GX-260/270 computers get a BSOD.

Wow, what a goat rope!

This was fortunately my first experience with Dell and its support solutions, the equipment that I have been running has been VERY stable and reliable so I havent had the need to interact with the Customer Service / Support side of things.  After today I pray I never have to again.  :(

Submitted an online support incident @  http://support.dell.com/ figure I will try to share what I had found on this issue so they could use it to help their end users with the same problem, also hoping to find a perminant fix when one is found, only to receive an email back a day later telling me they dont support the PowerVault line on the eSupport pages, hmm the site took my service tag# and even asked me questions about my PowerVault in the submission process.

No problem I will try to iniate the process again, this time I will call.  Was helped by a curtious and friendly person, only to be told that the fix was to uninstall the updates related to MS04-032.  Well no kidding I thought to myself...  I just spent the last two min telling this person thats what I did to get the server back up.  I explained I was more intrested in getting in the loop for WHEN a REAL fix was uncovered only to be told there was really no way for them to do that.  I could try calling back in a week or so he said, or check Microsofts site as this was a Microsoft problem, thats when I threw my hands in the air in frustration.  So out of five servers, I have two fail with this patch and they both happen to be Dell Servers, hmm... walks like a duck.  Sounds like a Dell / Microsoft issue to me, god I hate that "well its not our fault".  What a waste of my time....  :(

Sorry for the Rant, I will post if I get ahold of anything worthwhile.
