msn messenger

I am unable to get into my msn messenger.  my status is greyed out and when I try to sign in  a messaage comes up saying signing in to .NET messenger service failed and asked if I am on the internet.  My icon has the X meaning away or busy.  Maybe somehow I disconnected it  not sure what to do.  I can still check my email on hotmail

Have you gone into Norton's firewall and made sure that msn messenger and windows messenger has internet access?
 
If your not sure how to do that, just let me know.

Let's see if this is the problem:
 
  • Double click on the Norton's Internet Security icon in the quick launch tool bar (bottom of the screen), It's the one that looks like a green earth globe. 
  • When the NIS windows comes up, make sure Norton Internet Security is selected (it should be). Click on "Personal Firewall", then on "Configure".
  •  Next, click on the "Programs" tab.
  •  Scroll down until you see Microsoft MSN Messenger.
  •  Under the "Internet Access" column, make sure it says "Automatic" (click on the down arrow to change it).

Double-check that there is only one entry for MSN Messenger, sometimes there can be more than one entry per program.

We're you able to find the MSN Messenger entry in the programs section of Norton's firewall?

I've noticed that you have MyWebSearch installed on your pc. If you didn't directly install it, un-install it using "Add/Remove programs". If you cannot locate MyWebSearch, post back any entry(s) that have 'search' in the name, or entry(s) that you don't immediately recognize.

Hi Mike,
Yes I found the Norton Security and all is well now with messenger. Thanks so much. However, when I click on My Web Search(Smiley Central) to remove it an error pops up RUNDLL saying the specified module could not be found. Not sure what this means??

Can you post back the entire text message that your getting when trying to un-install MyWebSearch?

The message is    Error Loading     C:\Progra~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsbar.dll

Ok, let's see if AdAware and Spybot can flush that off your system. If not, we'll see if we can 'hijack' it out...
 
 
Download, install and run the following programs:
 
AdAware SE Personal; version 1.05
 
Be sure to check for, and install any signature updates before beginning each scan. Then use AdAware to " perform a full system scan" and Spybot to " Check for Problems".
 
 
Even if your on dialup, and don't have the above programs, both are free to download and use. Add them to your weekly cleaning schedule.
 
If your having problems downloading the signature updates for either one, please post back.
 
When you completed scanning with both, post back a new highjack log.
