My machine is going nuts with these files...

I havn't seen it so this until recently.  I have XP home edition.  It has been automatically creating these strange folders like :

1d3b25872cbeda2cfe16f640862c
and placing a large text file called msxml4-KB927978-enu in each one of these.  This is only a very small portion of the file.. What is this stuff?  How do I make my machine stop doing this?

Many thanks.

Thanks for your response, but how do I know that has anything to do with my problem?

It appears that an update did not fully install.  Check out this web site for some information on it.

This taken from the link that I provided:

Go to the Windows Update site and click on "View my History".  Is there an indication of a failure?
Look for the msxml4-KB927978 update.  Is there a red X or a green check.
This will tell you if it applies to you.

Here is a shot of my updates showing that it was succesful.
If you have a Red X, then follow the steps outlined in the above link.
