My (short) Vista experience

Question

thought id share my vista experience with this board in hopes some1 will read it BEFORE they waste their money on this OS... read below.

i just received a brand new shiny Dell XPS 410 yesterday..
dual core 2.4ghz intel 4mb cache (E6600)
2gb ram
nvidia 8600GTS
250gb 3gbps sata HD
integrated 7.1 audio
upon purchase i had no OS options other than Vista ;\
My impressions.... within 3 minutes of first firing it up i was setting up user accounts for the wife and kid. Locked up!!! I thought to myself.. "here we go".
so i reboot and get it runnin again..this time it makes it thru the account creation. Next was gettin online to have access to info as i knew i was gonna need help gettin things done as the changes are enough from XP to create some confusion.. spent over an hour trying to get it to see the inet... no cheese. so i pop in the handy xp pro disc... *FORMAT* and reinstall XP. within another 40 minutes im back up and runnin solid and stable. Vista sure was purty tho Wink

if anything id suggest making sure any box u buy has available XP drivers for it if you cant get a different OS than Vista. in retrospect im sure Dell is aware of what a piece of junk this OS is.. the problem most likely lays with contracts and agreements they have with MS to roll out new OS's and stop providing older OS's at agreed upon dates.. it really is a shame tho to see what this is doing to the users that end up having to run it.

Instead of installing XP you could try install Vista with the DVD you may received. Remember Dell computers came with a lot of programs, that most of the times makes troubles... Many people, as well as me, format the computers to avoid all this problems... You could (or can) try that.   I've been running Vista Ultimate on a Inspiron E1505 Intel Core Duo 1.6 2 Gb of RAM 256 ATI X1400 80GB HDD & DimeE520 Intel Dual Core 2.66 2Gb RAM 256 GeForce 7300LE ( needs to change) 160 Gb HDD 200 Gb HDD   In both computers I formated the HDD and installed Vista from scratch. And it's working nice...

I must say, you shouldn't have to go through problems like that with a new purchase straight out of the box. But unfortunately things like this happen. But it is not fair to blame it on Vista. Vista is great OS. I concur with the mention of a lot of stuff Dell puts in the computer causes problems and one should get rid of the bloatware that is installed. I did prior to upgrading to Vista from XP MCE. Vista for me runs smoother and faster than my previous OS. Don't be so quick to ditch Vista.

You had Vista condemned before you ever got your new PC.
Not your like of knowledge on how to fix small software problems.
Not your ability to run perfectly good Vista OS
Why did you not ask how to fix your internet problem before you bumped Vista because you already had condemned Vista smart move.
Why did you not send it back to Dell and tell them you are not capably of running a Vista computer.

OH i know Vista IS A WASTE OF MONEY

looks like i need to dump Vista OFF OF MY 3 PC,s and go back to XP or better yet ME, 98se, 98, 95 or windows 3.11

Everybody can Install XP/Vista/Win9x/WinMe on any computer, just boot to the CD and follow the instructions... As a normal clean install...

Just send it back.  You still have plenty of time.  With all of the different systems you can buy, do your research, and purchase carefully.  I have little sympathy for either your problems or your attitudes at this point.  Bill

This is certainly an interesting thread.  Needless to say, there are many people out there who do not like Vista for a number of reasons.  I have been running Vista on my 3½ year old Dell 4600 for about two months now and I love it. I did have some startup problems and was helped by the good people on this forum in a number of areas.  I am just wondering whether all the problems are Vista's fault or whether it may be caused by other factors and it is easy to blame the OS.  I wonder whether Dell is checking out all the drivers, etc. before shipping the box ... anyways, to each his own and if you are more comfortable with XP then go for it!  It is only an OS ... hey, whatever makes you happy!

Hay if you can not read by now you are out of luck I need your help because my $12.00 modem will not work with Vista AND I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK TO XP OH never mind i can do without a $12.00 modem with Vista. I have read all of the problems XP users are have over there and i can not go back to XP. it may not work with XP. .And you can not get a computer to go online with Vista so how can you help me get a $12.00 modem working with Vista or XP I will stick the Vista you know the one i wasted my money on. I had WinXp Pro and went form that to Vista... Worked nice .. no Probs... Then I tried to get my wireless to work .. and poof . it was SO not working. so after a month of suffering with a cord I was like forget this and went to XP Pro again. I think hands down. no matter what ANYONE says... XP use to be bad. SO bad that everyone is doing what they are doing to Vista right now ... putting it down. THEN after a year ... XP was great... and everyone used it.. I think we just need to give Vista some time to get up their with XP... and then worry about the next OS Microsoft will come up it.

I'm inclined to agree with the OP.

I purchased a 9200 back in Jan/Feb with no other OS to choose from but Vista. I knew it would have problems, but i never knew I'd get so frustrated with the unresolved issues. Not a week into having it did the pc start locking up and give me errors about software that Dell put on the box. After talking to both Dell and MS's helpdesks and getting nothing in the way of useful help, i was ready to send the box back and get my money back. I even tried installing XP, but kept getting the BSOD.

Suddenly, the issues stopped and all was well for a few months until a few days ago when the freezes began again. The errors now showed up in search results and led me back to Dell's forums. The issue that supposedly will end up being fixed with a software patch sits on a forum of 32 pages with multiple attempted workarounds and a bunch of very frustrated people (including the OP). There are fights on this post regarding Dell's seemingly uncaring attitude about continuing to sell a product with an obvious and known flaw (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/03/28/dell_vista_raid/).

I knew better than to use a MS OS so soon out of the gate, so i'm only to blame for this, but it will make me think twice next time and do better research on the pc manufacturer i choose. Dell has never done me wrong in the past, so they're getting the benefit of the doubt this time around. I won't be so forgiving next time around, nor will i be so eager or blinded by something so 'pretty'.
