Need Help after an XP Reinstall

Question

I have an Insprion 6000 that about a month ago started functioning poorly. It was very slow and I was having trouble running certain programs (ie I would get 32 bit errors and certain 16 bit errors for example I couldn't use any of the accessories - they wouldn't launch).

I did an XP reinstall and now my computer looks completely different. When I go to the device manager I can see that I don't have drivers installed for the Ethernet, multimedia audio, network controller, PCI modem and the video controller. I've tried to download them from Dell's website without any luck. My laptop won't connect to the internet either via ethernet or via wireless so I've been reduced to copying files on my son's computer and transferring them to my laptop. The specs for my computer are:

The system is only about a year and a half old. I'm wondering what to do next. I have all of my files backed up but I wonder if I did something wrong during the reinstall that caused me to lose all of the drivers. The fonts are all messed up, I have two sets of user information for me.

I'm completely lost at this point and I can't get any help from the dell website. Did I screw this thing up?

How do I know which wireless card I have?

In addition to the info posted by jmwills, you should be aware that the Inspiron 6000 came in two models; the I 6000, and the I 6000 D.  The second model was equipped with a video card, the ati mobility x300.  I note that there is a part number that agrees with the 64 MB version of that card, W5322.   There are only two video drivers in the list for the I 6000.  One is the Intel driver for onboard video, the second is the ATI driver.

last question - I received an error message when I tried to update the video driver.  the error said that one or more files that are required are either missing or corrupt.  How do I know that I'm downloading the right video driver?

Thanks all.  I installed everything as required and everything looks back to normal.   However, I still cannot connect to my wireless network.  The icon on the left hand side of the tray is yellow and when I scroll over it it tells me that wireless networks have been found and to double click to see them.  So I double click.  It takes a good two minutes for the pop up window to appear on my screen and when it does it seems to be endlessly searching for the wireless networks.  It seems to be caught in a loop.  Inside the box it says that it is searching and once in a while the networks will appear for a split second then disappear again, never to return.  I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it three times already and still nothing.   I've tried the Fn F2 button and my wi-fi light is on but still nothing.  I'm sitting right in front of the access point so the signal should be strong.  I'm sure its broadcasting the ssid, but right now I'm baffled as to why I can't see any of the wireless networks.   Also, when I run my cursor over the intel proset box it disappears so that I cannot click anything.   Any ideas?  I've searched the Dell support pages for troubleshooting wireless networks and my wife's new 1520 connects with no problem.  Mine was great before the XP reinstall and as I've said everything else seems to be working fine.   TIA

I found this on another site:

1. Go to the control panel & select "Administrative Tools".

2. In Administrative Tools, go to "Services".

3. On the Services screen, scroll down until you find "Wireless Zero Configuration".

4. Start this service.

5. Now go to "Network Connections" and right click your wireless adapter icon.

6. I can't remember exactly which tab it is, but find the one where you have the option
to check or uncheck "Use Windows to configure my wireless connections" or something to that effect. Make sure it is checked.

After following the above instructions my ipconfig /all now reads:

I disconnected the ethernet cable to ensure that the wireless card is now working and it appears to be. The only thing left is the Intelproset icon is now green with a little yellow warning symbol and when I roll over it with my cursor it says:

What is that all about?

I started to ask you whicj service you were using becasue the WZC service is very good for handling the connections and the third party ones like Intel and awfully overblown.  Make WZC the default connection tool.   Run an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew and you should be okay.   Unplugging the ethernet cable really did nothing as both cards can pull a simultaneous IP Address but the wired connection has a lower metric number and will be used as the primary connection.
