Need help with MS Paint v5.1, installed w/WindowsXP
Hi Friends,
Is this the right forum to post a question about MS Paint v 5.1, which was installed with Windows XP on my Dell computer (and I assume upgraded with SP's 1 and 2)?
I've used Paint before, and not had any trouble. But I am trying to edit some cliparts that are gif's. All I want to do is change the tint of one color. However Paint will not allow me to use a color that is not already in use, in the image. I've tried using the Color Selection tool (the eyedropper) and I've even tried defining new custom colors, using the Custom Color editor (I assume it's called an editor). But no matter what color I choose, Paint assigns the color which is the closest to what I want, from those colors which are already displayed in the image. It seems I cannot introduce a new color.
Can someone tell me what's causing this and/or what I can do about it? Is there any way to display a color of my choosing, which is not already displayed in the image?
If this is not the right forum, please tell me which forum to post this in. I've already struck out, posting in the Windows XP forum.
Thanks very much.
Brynn

It sounds like you need more than the basic Paint program for modifying graphics.
The Google "Picasa" is a free graphics program that probably will do what you want. There may be other free programs around, otherwise you need to invest in a good graphics program such as Adobe Elements or Microsoft Digital Image.

Hey, thanks fireberd and RoHe :smileywink:
So I guess I should assume that you're saying the problem has more to do with Paint being a relatively unsophisticated program, than anything else. If I had not used this same feature, which has worked well before, but which is now not working, I would probably accept more readily that there's nothing I can do about it. And I appreciate the resources you have given me. Particularly the Paint-based editor, where I'm thinking someone will be able to tell me who to contact about my problem. Unfortunately, I never pass up a chance to learn something, and there is something to learn from every problem. So I'm going to keep looking for help. But I very much appreciate your time and effort in posting your replies.
Thanks.
