.NET Framework SP1 upgrade problem

I upgraded my new Dell XPS 710 Microsoft Media Center XP to Vista Home Premium and have run into the perverbial .NET framework SP1 upgrade problem. I have tried many things as mentioned by a lot of forum suggestions and it boils down to the following:

"Download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and remove the .NET framework 1.1 from the machine."

I have downloaded the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and run it which seems to be the only thing that works. But I can never remove .NET framework - the hard drive runs a very long time but I still see .NET 1.1 in my programs. I have even left it run for 1/2 hour so as not to rush to judgement here only to come back, hard drive has ceased churning away but .NET 1.1 is still shown in my programs. This seems to be the hanging point for me.

Any other suggestions I can try?

This worked for me--it removes the whole Framework 1.1 application which as I understand in not necessary in Vista anyway. http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx

Thanks!  Your suggestion worked just fine so finally Vista is working for me without any glitches at least right now. I also had a bluetooth problem with my keyboard that would not allow the volume control knob to work but upon logging in the other day but then came along an automatinc update from Logitech which cured that problem. Now that really made me a happy camper!!

Funny thing too about .NET Framework, after fixing the problem and installing my TRAINZ simulation software, it stated that it needed .NET Framework 1.1 and then it installed it without problems too.

Thanks again!!

From the problem description, I understand that update KB929729 was not installed due to error code 643. In my case this issue was caused by a damaged .NET Framework component try the following steps it worked for me:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility

============================================

1. Visit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Save the file on the Desktop.

3. Please right click msicuu2.exe on the Desktop, and click "Run as administrator" to install this tool on your computer. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1

===========================

1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.

3. Restart the computer and see if the issue still exists.

For more information, please refer to:

----------------------------------

Title: Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
