New INSPIRON : Partitions?

Received my first &new INSPIRON 6000 yesterday.

Only ONE partition on c:\  ...... no XP-CD..... no Docs.... and 10 GB HDD space missing ....  :-((

I already learned that the 10 GB are located in a hidden partition.

Questions:
========
Are there any concerns to make a System recovery CD and THEN...
- install e.g. *Partition Magic*
- delete the hidden partition
- create other partitions as needed

Would this interfere with the F11/F12 boot option?

Thanks for your feedbacks

rolarom,

Are there any concerns to make a System recovery CD and THEN...
You cannot make that CD. That capability no longer exists on current Dells. Request the XP reinstallation CD as described here.

- install e.g. *Partition Magic*
Not needed. You can repartition the hard drive as a part of the installation of Windows XP. See this.

- delete the hidden partition
That will eliminate the disk image used by PC Restore, but if you are capable of reinstalling XP that is not a major concern, as that image is provided as a disaster recovery option for novice users who cripple their systems early in their ownership of it.

- create other partitions as needed

Would this interfere with the F11/F12 boot option?
Yes, both by modifying the Master Boot Record and eliminating the 10GB image. See the first paragraph in the link in the answer to the question about Partition Magic.

You are right & I am upset that DELL ships notebooks w/o CD's, leaving the customer helpless in case of trouble or special requirements, because even the self-burning utility is gone.

Ordered those CD's

Thx
