A clean reinstallation includes formatting which will remove all the contents of the C:\ partition before installing Windows. Are you following the procedures given
here and in the included links? To avoid possible problems with SP2 you can install it immediately after you have installed the version of XP which you have on the CD.
It might be helpful if you posted the exact wording of any error messages you are receiving when you attempt to install SP2.
