No XP operating system discs
I have just bought a new Dell 5150 Desktop in England which arrived with no operating system discs. On seeing previous messages in the forum about people being sent the complete XP operating system discs when they requested them, I emailed Dell and asked for them to be sent to me.
Their response was less than helpful, saying that due to Microsoft regulations they could not send the discs. Is this correct as it seems unbelievable that the only recoverable source for any restoration is on the hard drive, which may itself be subject to corruption.
There are a number of reasons why you might want to reformat the drive and reinstall the complete operating system from scratch.
What happens if you cannot even open windows to get to this restore utility?
Has anyone else had this answer from Dell? Has anyone received the discs?

Many users have had that answer, and similar ridiculous responses ("PC Restore takes the place of a reisntallation CD") when requesting the CD. The number in this post worked at one time, but it is quite old now and I don't know that it will work any more.

The problem is more easily dealt with in the US. Try one of the links in this post to request the XP CD. You may have to try several techs before one agrees that you need it and agrees to send it.

I also just received a new Dell with no OS here in the U.S. Had I known this before ordering, I probably would not have ordered it. I have been buying Dell for 15 years and can't believe they are doing this. This sounds like something some of the other manufactures would do, but not Dell. With all of the viruses and adware out there we will probably need to reinstall Windowsxp sometime. If it goes as bad as I think it will, I will look elsewhere for my next computer. $1300.00 and no OS!

Hello,
I bought a Dell Dimension 5150 in the Netherlands (December 2005) but didn't like the additional pre-installed software (90 day versions among some other things...)
The next day I went to this site to install the application that shows the 'Current Configuration Overview'. The result shown here tells you exactly what hardware is in your system and tells you in fact which drivers are needed in your particular system. I downloaded these and burnt them to a CD.
I created a '' Dell OS Recovery CD' - the CD created is the Windows XP OS CD, but you don't have to enter a license key and activation is not needed.
Then, I installed Windows XP again, deleted the partition and did a clean install. After that, I installed the drivers and everything is just fine now.
BTW, This pc is sooooo quiet compared to my other system!
