Norton Internet Security or/versus Windows Vista?

Question

I just bought a new machine with Vista and it came pre-installed with Norton Internet Security 2007.  Are these two programs redundant?  It seems as though Vista has many or all of the same features that Norton does.  Should I:   1.  Uninstall Norton and roll with Vista exclusively?  2.  Only use parts of Norton with Vista? 3.  Uninstall Norton and use AVG or some other program to complement Vista?   Thanks.

Keep Norton. Vista does not have an antivirus program included.

I use Norton IS 07 on my XPS410 with Vista Home Premium. I have not encountered any conflicts between Vista and Internet Security. I totally trust Symantec products on all of my systems. I disabled Windows Firewall and kept Windows Defender active.  Best Regards   ColbyK

KEEP Norton NIS. As stated in a few other replies, Vista does NOT include virus protection. I have NIS 2007 running on 4 systems (including a new Vista Ultimate system) and it integrates very well with both XP and Vista. Unlike previous generations of Norton software, 2007 is NOT a resource hog.   If I might make one suggestion however: Open NIS, click on Settings and under Basic Security, click Auto Protect and Configure. Click on General Settings under Live Update (left column) and UNCHECK 'Run quick scan whenever protection updates have been received'.   Leaving this option checked (which is the default) will slow down your system every time an update is received. This is up to you of course, but a quick scan is not really required if auto protect is on, you have allowed automatic Live Update, and you let Norton do its weekly scan.

Just recently upgraded to Vista, I had NIS 2007 prior to the install and noticed today that it was gone. Any clue on how to get it back??

I think Norton stinks - cost too much to use every year. My advice dump Norton, use the windows firewall (until Zone Alarm comes out with their Vista version free version) Use Avast Home (www.avast.com) it's free and works very well and it works on both the 32 and 64bit version of Vista.

I had sworn off Norton Internet Security (after having mixed success with it through the 2004, 2005, and 2006 versions) until I started reading good reviews for their 2007 product from (what I would consider) unbiased reviewers. I installed the NIS 2007 30-day trial on my Windows XP PC about a month ago and am extremely pleased with it. I ended up purchasing it. They finally seem to have figured out how to get it right. My only complaint is that their updates still require reboots too often--this isn't a problem with their enterprise products; why is it a problem with NIS?

Anyway, I just purchased an XPS 410 with Vista and NIS 2007. In the system tray, Vista keeps warning that "There are multiple security problems with your computer". I'm not sure if that's the case or not. I have installed all Vista and NIS updates and have turned on all NIS features; in addition, NIS's Norton Protection Center has a green indicator and says that everything is Secure. However, the Vista security warnings have not gone away. Can I safely ignore these warnings?

The Windows Security Center states that the Windows Firewall is turned off. It also states that "Windows did not find antivirus software on this computer" and "Windows Defender is turned off". I can tell it that I have my own firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware installed, but shouldn't Vista and NIS communicate better? I don't have this problem on my Windows XP PC.

Symantec's KB article 2007020112182836 ("Windows Security Center indicates that spyware and malware protection is out-of-date although your Norton Protection Center reports no issues") sounds promising, but its solution is to run LiveUpdate--which, even after a reboot, does not resolve the problem.

Do any of you VISTA guys know if this is a problem with VISTA?

PROBLEM: Windows XP (and VISTA?) System Restore will not restore to a past restore point

Solution:
1. Go to Norton AV Options

2. Click Miscellaneous at the bottom of the left hand column

3. UNcheck "Turn protection on for my Symantec product" at the bottom of the page

4. The Windows System Restore operation will now work OK

[Do remember to reset this action after you have successfully restored. It does NOT need to be unchecked in order to set a restore point, and it confers a significant added degree of protection from very sophisticated viruses.]

Doing a successful XP System restore may corrupt AV and require reinstallation!

I suspect VISTA is just not detecting Norton. You say that you cannot understand why not? Ha!?! You're lucky they're running together at all.

Make sure you have completely disabled the Vista security settings for their firewall and AV and security center. You can leave Windows defender on, as it only runs an occasional scan and doesn't seeem to interfere.

Symantec uses their own security center manager for managing norton products which in turn disables detection and notification of Antivirus Programs under XP and Vista. (This was to prevent alert spam problems.
