Norton SystemWorks 2004 Configuration Error Message

I recently upgraded from Norton System Works (NSW) 2003 to NSW 2004.  I did uninstall NSW 2003 first before installing NSW 2004.  The upgrade went fine - I was able to successfully register and activate the product.  All of NSW 2004 seems to be working as expected.

But there is one problem - when I start any limited privilege Windows XP Pro account - I get the following alert message.   I get this message when I start the account.  I'm not talking about the message that you sometimes get from within NSW when you try to activate a service like WinDoctor from a limited account.  I am fully aware that you can only activate and manage system resources through the Administrator account.

Here is the message that I want to stop appearing when I start a limited account:  "Norton SystemWorks Pro 2004 configuration is not complete. You must have administrator privileges to complete the configuration using the Information Wizard."  I can click "OK" and everything seems normal, but I don't like getting the message.

1.  I've used NSW 2002 and NSW 2003 with this same PC with the same Windows XP Pro installation.  I did not get the message with those prior versions.  Why do I get the message with NSW 2004?

2.  I am willing to have 2004 run exactly like 2002 and 2003.

3.  I am not trying to allow "limited accounts" to manage system resources.

4.  I am not trying to configure NSW in any special way.

5.  I am perfectly OK with the concept that only the Administrator can run NSW 2004 and manage system resources, i.e., perform tasks like Speed Disk, WinDoctor, and Disk Doctor.

6.  It's as if NSW thinks the install & configuration process is not yet complete - like there is some incorrect flag set in the registry.

SO TELL ME HOW TO MAKE THIS MESSAGE GO AWAY.

1st Update:

I wrote to Symantec on 11/3.  The company called me on 11/12 offering help.  First, Symantec agreed that my issue was a "problem - not a feature."  Second, it duplicated the problem on a Windows XP test PC.  Third, Symantec emailed me a first draft of a "[Knowledge Base] Support Document" for solving the problem.  Fourth, the fix does involve editing the registry.  Symantec also offered to work with me, on the phone for free, to fix the problem.  That's pretty good customer service.  Of course, I had to complain to headquarters to get it!

I'm not posting the Symantec solution because it's still a draft and undergoing testing; I wouldn't want to cause new problems for other Dell Forum members.  I haven't tried the fix yet because I'm a little busy right now.  I reinstalled the old version so I'm not currently getting the congfiguration message anyway.

I received my 100% refund for NSW2004 from Symantec in 18 days.  So latest version might have problems, but at least the company honors its guarantee.

2nd Update

Symantec posted the fix to this problem at http://service1.symantec.com/support/nsw.nsf/c851d9242b6f1c4d88256d8000469d43/12bb8d848539e49c88256ddc0075f4e7?OpenDocument&prod=Norton%20SystemWorks&ver=2004%20Professional%20for%20Windows%202000/Me/98/XP&src=sg&pcode=nsys&svy=&csm=no

If the long link doesn't work, go to http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nsys/nsw_2004_pe_tasks.html and navigate to the document 2003111213374307 dated 1/13/2004.  In summary, you edit the registry for each limited user to remove "cfgwiz.exe" in the "run" key.

Symantec is aware of problems with Systemworks 2004 product activation and is supposedly working on them. IMO Systemworks is more trouble than it's worth as well as not needed in Win XP. All you really need is Antivirus. The Norton tools duplicate the tools built into XP and are not even as good. I would uninstall everything except NAV. I'm staying with updated NAV 2003. http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5099884.html?tag=zdfd.newsfeed

You might want to check the Norton Knowledge Base at the Symantec site for more info.

I'd have to agree with Mary.  2004 may be the year to skip upgrading Norton.  Don't be surprised if they end up doing what Intuit did and eliminate product activation.

NAV 2003 will continue to be updated for at least another year or 2.  The other Systemworks app I use, Ghost, wasn't even updated in NSW 2004.  It's still Ghost 2003.

Mary and Dave,

Thank you for your replies.  I contacted Symantec Technical Support.  After many emails, Symantec essentially says "It's not a problem, it's a feature."  Supposedly, there is no way to delete this message. Frankly, I don't think Symantec understands my problem and I thought I wrote a complete description. I am complaining to Symantec and requesting a full refund.

You can request a refund from (enclose copy of receipt - you do NOT need to return the product):

If you want a really good anti-virus which is much faster, less intrusive, much smaller, and better than NAV then you should consider NOD32.  You can get a free 30 day trial here.  Read through the accolades and look at the virus bulletin tests.  I have tried most of the antiviruses.  I have never found one that can come close to NOD32.

Mary... I was getting ready to install sw2004 on my xppro 5150 because the old sw2002 worked so well on my old dt with w98.  Now I am a bit apprensive.  Curious... what xp feature will clean up all the register errors like sw does with its one step check up?  and will xp defrag clear disk space with 1 and 0's?

Hi Mary,

My computer came with a 90 day free trial of NAV, 2003.  My question:  Should I just pay for the update of NAV 2003?  Reading this thread leads me to believe there is a problem with 2004.

Your input would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth

Personally I would uninstall NAV 2003 and use something else.  But if you are not having any problems with it and prefer to stay with Norton, I would pay for the update of 2003 and not mess with NAV 2004.  If Symantec follows their usual course, NAV 2004 will have all the bugs cleared up about the time they release NAV 2005 and start the cycle all over again.
