Numlock not staying On after login

Has anyone ran into the problem of the numlock turning off after logging in?  The system is an Optiplex, is a member of a domain (Pro), and has SP-2 installed.  In the bios the numlock is enabled and it does come on during the boot process and startup of Windows, but after the login, it turns off.  I have tried to enable it, then log off thinking that this would save as a preference, but it did not.

Is there a registry setting for this?

Sorry about that, maybe I should learn to read, before I start typing...:smileyhappy:

Anyhow, what kind of keyboard do you have, is it a media style, or have programable keys? If so, then open that program and check for a numlock setting.

I don't recall a registry setting for the numlock, but then again, I do have a reading problem.

It is usually a BIOS setting, on reboot, hit F2 when the DELL logo screen appears. goto the BIOS section, and you should find a swith for numlock to be on at boot.

Start> Run> type: regedit and hit OK. Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard click on Keyboard and in the right pane, InitialKeyboardIndicators Value data should be 2 for Num Lock on.
Also:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard click on Keyboard in right pane,
InitialKeyboardIndicators Value date 2 for Num Lock on.

I have a reading problem too.

There's a registry trick for numlock http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/196/

Did you restart the computer after you made the changes in the registry?

CompConn,

This same thing was listed as a bug in Win NT, although it was supposed to be fixed in later updates. Can't hurt to try

After making the change in the registry given to you by Sparkenh & Augie65 try this.

RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and choose Logoff to log off. This procedure permanently saves the NumLock key state when you log off.

I had similar issue, followed all the above recommendations, then for grins I did a registry search for all InitialKeyboardIndicators,  and found it listed in more places. One of those was set to "0" so I changed it to "2" and NumLock is now staying on after signing in.

To search the registry, hit "CTRL" and "F" together. Enter the phrase you are searching for. After finding each instance, bring up search again, and hit enter to find the next instance, you will quickly find all entries.

Hope this helps.

I know this thread is 6 years old, but.....

I have a similar issue with the Optiplex 790's. Even with the registry changes after the user logs on, num lock goes off. It seems to only work for the local administrator on the workstation. All users/administrators and domain users/administrators seem to have the same issue of not saving the last known num lock setting.

NOTE :  this does not happen on the 780's or 755's.

Problem Solved : This was a user profile issue. After using the local administrator profile for the detault profile it worked.

I am having this exact same issue. My IT support team has been unable to resolve it, even after calling Dell for support. Can you please explain step by step how you resolved the issue? I am one user in many hundreds in this company. I would need someone from IT to make any changes to the BIOS so if you could provide a detailed solution that I can pass onto them that would be very much appreciated.

thank you.
