OEM Software question
i'm in a market for Systemworks 2003 so i've been checking out yahoo, amazon, newegg, etc. and i noticed that they're selling a bunch of softwares that are dirt cheap. catch is, it's either disc-only or OEM. first of all what is OEM? are these softwares legit? would it work on my system (XP home)? what are the pros and cons on buying disc-only and OEM vs. something that's still in the box from officemax, besides price?

"OEM" versions do not have any support by the software vendor. e.g. the Windows XP Operating System software that comes with new PC's is an "OEM" version - it is not supported by Microsoft it is supported by Dell (if it's a Dell PC).
If you are comfortable with no support or support that you have to pay for then OEM is OK. If you want the "free" vendor support go with the "retail" versions. This may be a moot point as quite a bit of the vendor software support is "terrible" at best.
However, you have to be careful with the auction sites as some of the software being sold is counterfeit or used software and in the case of used software if it's been registered or activated by someone else, there may be problems getting it activated and using it.
