Ok after some pondering I feel cheated!
Let me explain...I purchsed aan xps 1530 and I do infact love it but I found out that it has Windows Vista Sp1 Ultimate 32 bit edition. Whan I first inquired on this message board about that I was told that there wasn't a profound diferencebtween the 64 and 32 but I have come to find out that the 32 bit edition only recognizes up to 3gb ram. Now I ordered a system with 4gb. Why, then I ask, was it that I was sold the 32bit instead of the 64bit? I have also read how great the performance is with the 64 and feel utterly cheated.
I am confused and dissappointed. I have spent much money with this company over the years and feel more than a bit slighted.

I can't speak for Dell, as I am not a Dell employee, just a user helping users, like almost everyone on here.
The 32 bit OS is standard on most PC's, unless specifically noted. On most PC's that it's not standard there is an optional at extra cost 64 bit OS available, but in most cases the customer must request this.
I have a PC with both Vista 32 bit and 64 bit (on separate hard drives). Although the 64 bit will address more memory, many applications programs are not written to take advantage of the 64 bit and thus many of my programs are in an "X86" programs folder. I also have some hardware that is not 64 bit compatible. The only thing I'm using 64 bit for, right now, is for my audio recording studio, otherwise I use the 32 bit for day to day PC operations. If you have to some high end photo or graphic applications programs (that are designed for 64 bit) then the 64 bit OS would be the better choice.
If you are not happy with your purchase, Dell has a 21 day, from the date it was shipped, return window to call Dell and requrest a return authorization. You can then get a model with the 64 bit OS, if that is what you really want.
Actually the 32 bit OS probably is recognizing somewhere around 3.2 to 3.4 GB, depending on how much memory is used for Video. My Vista 32 bit desktop shows 3.324GB or RAM.

Unless you are a power user and need more than 4GB RAM, Vista 32 is what you want. In addition to the lack of support available for many programs and much hardware, you may hane LESS RAM available for programs with Vista 64 because of the OS requiring more RAM for the basic OS. With the M1530 and Vista 32, you will have almost 3.6GB available out of the 4GB installed.

Also... you can request a 64bit version of the OS :emotion-55:
If you're in the USA - use the 'Chat' option, to speak to a rep' (requires your service tag number). - else just email your request to tech support.
