Operating system disks
I bought this computer used for a 12 year old boy and it does not have any disks with it. Is it possible to get a copy of the original disks that came with it?
It is a Dell Dimension 4550. I'm trying to find an outlet for this child.
Thank you for any help.

You could try here, but I'm not certain that Dell would supply reinstallation discs for a system as old as the 4550.
You may have to buy a new OEM copy of XP, all the drivers and applications for the 4550, can be downloaded from Dell's website.

Don't be surprised if they won't send you the CDs since you're not the registered owner according to Dell's records. ;)

I won't be surprised...but I have some hope. The boy is not mine, but desparately needs something good in his life to keep him busy. I'm banking on an old Dell to give him that, but I know it's a thin thread when he needs a rope.
Thank you for your reply.

Larry,
I wouldn't know who the original owner was since it was a thrift store buy. I have the computer with the Service tags and no disks or paper work.
The system looks like a newly formatted install that's clean of any name or documents. For name it says User.
I have no other information.

The thrift store might have that information, or be able to ask the original owner to do the transfer.
Of course, with the system out of warranty, getting the transfer done won't really do much, but it can sometimes help out even then. I thought I would mention it in case you could do the transfer as I know for sure it would help in getting the replacement CDs (assuming they are available to begin with).

Thank you Larry I'll check with them.
I did fill out the form Dell sent for disks and let them scan this computer for the Service Code. My fingers are crossed that they will transfer ownership.
