Outlook Express 6 backup

The location varies depending on what operating system you are using. Do a search for *.dbx and you will find all your email files. To back them up you must copy the entire folder containg those files to removable media. If necessary, you can then restore them by opening OE and going to File|Import|Messages|Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and browsing to the file on the removable media.

In Windows XP I did such a search (in "all files and folders"). Nothing turned up. I tried both *.dbx and dbx.

They should be under C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{...alphanumerics...}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. You can also open OE and go to Tools|Options|Maintenance tab and click Change Store Folder. The current location of your message store will be shown in the dialog that appears.

Looking where you said ( C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{...alphanumerics...}\Microsoft\Outlook Express)

There is no Outllook Express there. But .....\Microsoft  shows a folder for Internet Explorer.

Looking into that folder I see nothing about outlook express.

Searching for "Outlook Express" in turns up in a folder called "I386". Looking at that there is a shortcut called "Outlook Express". Looiking at Properties for that, it leads to something in the Programs folder.

If I go to Outlook Express Tools  and "change store folder", I find a path "document and settings/myname/local settings/application data/identity/.... (something with numbers and letters)

But If I follow this path on the disk I get all the way to ..../application data...  but no "identity" after that. Instead there is a "microsoft" folder iand in  that a "windows" folder. Clicking on that it appears to be empty but probably just not showing files

I don't understrand all this. So far still have not found what i am looking for..

In Outlook Express 6, if I am online there is no way I know of to read my previous email or write a new email without at the same time downloading new email. Is that right?

I am having the same problem with backing up my Outlook xpress 6. I did a search for *.dbx and dbx. Search did not find anything. Went to tool, options, maint, store folder and then went into documents settings, then my folder and application data, identities, then a long number.

The store folder command reads ({CEC559C6-7EFB-4E3D-993D-8B05F1FCE406}\Microsoft\Outlook Express) When I click on the CEC etc folder the folder is empty?

Any Ideas?

I figured it out thanks to a post that I came across.

 

Goto Tools, Options and click on the Maintenance tab. Then click on the Store Folder. Highlite the complete storage location address.then copy it,(Control C). I then closed down Outlook Express. Then Click on Start, Run. In the open window paste the address location you just copied, (Control V). Click ok. A window will open with all the file folders on the left and the open outlook express folder with all the dbx files on the right. I hv a cdrw drive so I open up my computer then the d: drive and dragged all the dbx files from one folder to the other. I then deleted the dbx files from the original store folder. When I reopened outlook all the emails and folders I had accumulated in the last couple of years where gone. Just to make sure I shut down outlook again then dragged the dbx files from my cd back to the outlook folder in the store folder and then reopened outlooked and all the emails and folders where back.

 

Give it a shot and see if it works for you unless  you alread figured it out.

Something is going on here that I don't understand. If I go to OE options and find the path it is just as you say. Then, if I go to Windows Explorer and find that path, it is different. After "application data" there is a folder 'Microsoft" with another folder within it called "windows" with apparently nothing in it.

If I go directly to the C: disk and follow the path there, it is still different. After "application data" there is just two folders labeled "microsoft" and "real" with things in them I don't know what they are. I don't find anything called "identities".

When I go into Tools, Options, Maint. then Store Folder, the address I get is-

C:\Documents and Settings\My name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{CEC559C6-7EFB-4E3D-993D-8B05F1FCE406}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

I tracked the address to CEC559. When I opened that file there was nothing in it. But when I copied the full address, as you can see it above, and pasted it in the open box in the RUN program it opened up the \Microsoft\Outlook Express folders. The dbx files where in the outlook express folder.

I can not explain why you can access the folder one way but not the other.
