OUTLOOK EXPRESS - CAN'T ACCESS!!!!!

When I try to access Outlook Express either from desktop icon or from programs, I get the following error message:

"Outlook Express couldn't be started cause another instance of it is still
running on your computer. Log off Windows and then restart Outlook
Express. If problem persists, save your work and then restart your
computer."

I have a Dell 4600; OS: Windows XP Pro. Up to this time, have never had a problem with this program!

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? This has only happened in last couple of days, but is really, really frustrating. Both Microsoft and Dell have refused to assist unless I pay the really big bucks!!!!!

I know that NO other instance of Outlook Express is running. Computer has been restarted, shut down, restored, defragged, etc. I still continue to receive this message. Only way I can access email is to go directly to ISP provider's email site; when that happens, I'm unable to utilize my anti-spam program.

This is really a mess. I sure hope someone can help!!

Many thanks ...

paralegalsd,

I have never heard of that problem before. However, because "This has only happened in last couple of days" your easiest path to a solution may be to use System Restore to take your system back to its state three or more days ago.

When you start the computer and before you manually load anything, does Outlook Express show up on the Applications tab of Windows Task Manager?

Thanks for your response.
I have done System Restore. No help there.
I have had my computer for over two years. Yes, it is my first Dell and will probably be my last; not really impressed.
What is the Windows Task Manager?
What do you mean by my manually loading anything? Everything is pretty much set; I don't do a lot of stuff on my computer; it's very basic, i.e. email, Word Perfect, internet research, listening to CDs.
After clicking on Start, then Programs, and then Outlook Express about 4-8 times, then Outlook Express will sometimes deign to open (but not always).
Pretty strange!

Do you have messenger running in your system tray??

Check your task manager, and see if "msimn.exe" is running. If it is, that's outlook/messenger.

Try ending the task, then open outlook. Hope this helps.

paralegalsd,

Task Manager is opened by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete. When you start your system open Task Manager and look on the Applications tab for Outlook Express and/or on the processes tab for msimn.exe. See if they are present at startup.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, of course, now I know what Task Manager is.
The next time I start up my computer, I will immediately run Task Manager to see if somehow Outlook Express is running (why it would be, I don't know - but with those darn computer gremlins, anything is possible!).
See earlier reply: no, this is not a new computer. I've had this Dell since 11/03. Have been a long-time computer user; am very familiar with email and internet programs.
