Outlook Express corrupted

Question

In trying to import my e-mail address book from Earthlink Web Mail to Outlook Express, my pre-installed OE has become corrupted. I need to reload it but can't find any place where I can download Outlook Express 6 which is the version that was installed on my XPS M140 Dell Notebook. Can anyone help me - Please?! Nancy

To reinstall Outlook Express, follow these steps. You *may* need the Windows XP Disk, so if you do not have that disk, DO NOT follow these steps.

Back up all of your emails... (Using File / Export is one easy way)

Open Control Panel.

Go to Add / Remove Programs.

Choose Add / Remove Windows Components.

Uncheck Outlook Express.

Click Next, and exit out of the Add / Remove Windows Components.

Restart your computer.

Go through the same steps, but this time CHECK the box next to Outlook Express.

Replace all of your emails backed up in the first step. (Using File / Import)

If you do not have a copy of XP, try doing a restore to a date prior to the download.

What do you think of this link on about.com at http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpressbackuphelp/Outlook_Express_Tips_Tricks_and_Secrets_for_Backup_and_Restore.htm? I send stored files to gmail and an external hard drive. They can be recovered easily. My only worry; is gmail secure?

'Is Outlook harder'     Most say Yes.   Corruption issues can happen with both clients, and usually is contributed to too may emails being stored within the client. Once the dbx (OE) or pst (Outlook) files reach 1gb, corruption can occur.

'is gmail secure?'   Depends on what aspect you are talking about, is the data secure once it is on their servers? Who knows.   Always log onto gmail using the https address instead of the plain http.

First - I want to thank everyone for their replies and help. To give you a bit of background - I usually use Earthlink Web Mail to handle my e-mail. For the most part it works well but occasionally I try to send rather large e-mails or e-mails with large attachments. When I try to use Web Mail, it will timeout on me. So, since I can usually accomplish the same thing with Outlook Express, I'll use it as an alternative. I decided to import my address book from Earthlink to Outlook Express. In order to do this, I had to export it as a .cvs file and then try to import it into OE. No go! When Earthlink tried to help me is when OE got corrupted. Apparently it has to be imported through MS Excel and I don't have that program. I have tried the various programs that have been suggested here and they haven't worked. I'm out of solutions. So, my question has become - what will happen when I use the 'system restore' feature of Windows? How badly am I going to screw things up?

Query #1:  You will not 'screw things up by using restore.'  Query #2:  Download Java's Open Office, a free business suite.  Open office is compatible with Microsoft, including Power Point and Excel.  You can use it instead of Excel for most things.  Get it at OpenOffice.org.  It is free by the way.
