If chuket's suggestion does not work, a likely culprit is your antivirus email scanner. Try disabling it. (This is safe- your email is still protected).

If you use use Norton AV, more info on  this here: http://customersupport.acd.net/admin/articles/Turn%20off%20Nortons%20email%20scanning.cfm

If you mean your POP3 Server, you can access it from Regedit. If you don't want to mess with the registry, go no further. If you do want to explore the problem go to  Start  Run and type in regedit. In regedit, navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000000

To be on the safe side, click on POP3 Server and then on the file tab, select export and save it to the desktop in case it is needed for a restore.

In the right hand pane look for POP3 Server. It should display mail.your ISP.net. If it's not in that format right click on POP3 Server and select Modify. It can then be edited to your correct mail account. Open OE and see if it connects. Reboot and try OE again. If it keeps the settings you're all set. If not, something is resetting the POP3 Server.

Excellent find. I suspected that something was resetting his POP3 settings. Norton at it again.

Thanks chuket and joe for your suggestions. I think I will try the less aggressive first, by dissabling my antivirus (Mcaffee) on my laptop. If that does not work then I'll try the registry.

Will let you know which works.

sailmate:

I haven't used McAfee AV for years, but I presume the version you are using has an email scanning function. I wasn't suggesting you disable your resident AV program- just the email scanner function. Good luck.

When you got to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000000\POP3 Server

What did POP3 Server show.... your mail server or an IP address ?

NOTE:

If it's an IP address you can go to:

and it will give you the domain assigned to that IP address or a block of IP address. Maybe you can get a clue from that info.

thanks Joe, yes I understand it's just the email scanner. Actually I tried both suggestions and neither work. Oh, well, I'll keep trying and searching, I'm sure I'll figure it out sooner or later. I wouldn't normally have NcAfee AV either, but it came on the laptop so for now, that's what I have to work with. Thanks again for your help.

I have tried these options to fix this error and neither one works.  You can however do a temporary fix. Go to Tools/Accounts/Mail/Properties/Servers
Change the incoming server from 127.0.0.1 to incoming.verizon.net.  if you keep your computer on 24/7 you will never know that this problem occurs.  It appears to happen when a reboot of your system is done; so I turn mine off when it's not being used and will always have this issue unless someone knows exactly how to fix it.  I even did a system restore back to an earlier date when I knew that I did not have this issue and after the reboot, the Pop3 error was back again.  I do believe that several people are having a problem with this due to some websites that they have gone into and has damaged our systems.  I am not sure which sites are doing it but if we find out we should let others know about it to keep them from having the same problems as we have.

Sailmate,

Did you ever resolve the problem regarding to having to reset the POP3 setting, I have the same problem and like to know how to resolve.

Nope, sorry. It still does not work. I have to change the incoming pop server everytime I check mail on my laptop. Once it's signed on it stays connected, but I don't leave it on all the time. My next step is checking directly with Dell, but haven't done that yet. I will post back if/when I get this resolved. Or look forward to you or anyone who does resolve this.

sailmate,

Did you try the registry option from my first post? If you can use...... Start > Run > Regedit, navigate to the POP3 server location and copy the key that contains the POP3 info in the right-hand pane (edit tab > copy key name )  and post it here after first X'ing out your actual 'mail.xxxxxxx.net' in that post, we'll fix that later.

It should be in this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000000

Yours may be slightly different. Just look around the Accounts section until you find it. Then we can create a reg. file that will reset it with a simple click.

sailmate,

The POP3 Server should contain your mail access address. Is that the problem you're having? POP3 Server should be mail.xxxxxxxx.net . Was POP3 Server found in 00000001 or 00000000?

Also see if this applies:

Yes, I did that and changed it to the pop.xxxxx.net and that is there, but when I open Outlook Express and go to Tools, Options, Accounts, Properties, Servers, it is changed to the IP address and I have to change it to the pop.xxxxx.net .

is this the key you are looking for?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000001

What proceedure do you go through to reset the mail function? Did you copy the IP address you found for your mail account in the Ip domain locator in the earlier post and see who owned it?

Download the POP3 file from the link below. It will allow you to change your mail account to the correct one. If it is not in 00000001 as you said, it will shut down as a safety measure. The very first thing to do is use regedit and navigate to the registry key that contains POP3 Server and export that to the desktop just in case something gets messed up. You can name it pop3.reg. If you need to, you can d-click it to restore the registry back to where you started.
