Password not required
Running Windows XP SP2 I have somehow made it impossible to require passwords on boot-up. My computer boots up without the welcome screen, always in the same user account (which fortunately has administrator privileges). Even if I have logged on as Administrator, a reboot puts me back in the usual user account.
Only if the computer is recovering from hibernation does it require a password. When it is shut down completely and then booted back up it does not show either the Welcome screen nor the Windows 2000 logon screen. It simply boots up without showing a username and without requiring a password. A restart exhibits the same behavior.
In Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and off, whether or not Use the Welcome screen is checked, the behavior on recovering from hibernation, restart, and shut down is precisely the same as described above.
When the computer is started after being completely shut down, how can I require a password?

Go to Start|Run, enter control userpasswords2 and click OK. On the dialog that opens check "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." OK out.
