PBR image protection ON or OFF ?

ive upgraded to windows 10.. was wondering if in System Properties - PBR image protection should be on or off?? dont remember what it was set at under win8.1

Hi, Jessy. I'm currently on a quest to discover what it is that requestor is referring to as "PBR Image". I'll post the answer to here, if/when discovered. Do you know for sure what it is? I've presumed it is my Dell factory image partition - but now I'm leaning toward it is the Win 10 Recovery Tools partition (formerly the Win 8.1 Recovery Tools partition). Why would one want to include either in restore points? I don't think either ever changes. Even the upgrade to Win 10 created a new one & left the other behind.

It was off in Win 8.1, IIRC, & both were off in Win 10 - but I've turned one (C:) on, at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery - Configure System Restore"...

OK - I should have remembered - Seagate's DiscWizard puts a name (not seen in MS's Disk Management) on the Dell factory image partition...

The Dell Win 8.1 factory image is PBR Image, going by DiscWizard. But why would MS offer to make restore points for that? It is unchanging. I certainly won't choose to make them! Surely some day I will delete the partition instead!

Note: Neither DiscWizard (nor Disk Management) see the 128 MB reserved partition. But the 6 shown by DiscWizard are in the same order as they appear in the 7 shown by DiskPart.

i no longer have the option for PBR protection.. probably lost it after a clean win 10 install. i deleted all the partitions, as ive said before. i think that means it applies to the dell stuff.

By "tiny drive", do you mean an SSD? Do you have a second drive too, an HDD? Let me see a DiskPart of what's on there, too, then.

That ices it, Jessy. The option disappeared for you when rid of the Dell factory image partition. So, it is "PBR Image" - that's that. I couldn't quite find an answer elsewhere. Thanks.

But elsewhere I did get hints that Dell Backup & Restore (which I uninstalled in favor of Windows' System Image Backup & Seagate's DiscWizard) might actually write to the PBR Image. So, that could be a reason MS would have an option to turn on restore points for it. I don't know it for sure, though.

yeah, PCR, guess i did.. if u notice i asked about the PBR image a long time ago, back when win 10 first came out. and not one reply until u stumbled upon this old post. i looked ALOT trying to find the answer about the PBR, found nothing that answers whether to have protection on or not. I asked in the windows 10 insider forum and got the same answer i got here.. Zero.. well, now i dont have to worry about it, since i dont have one..  good to hear from u my friend.. hope all is well with you..

All is normal for me, & that's good enough. I hope you are well, too, in real life as well as in these newsgroups. You, me, & SpeedStep may be the first three users alive to know definitively what PBR Image is, judging from my BINGling as well. :-). Good luck.
