PCI Device in Device Manager for Optiplex 960

We have a new Optiplex 960 and installed Windows XP SP2. We have installed all the drivers that are 'tagged' by the Resource CD for this model however we still have a 'PCI Device' item listed under Device Manager. We would like to know the driver that needs to be installed to eliminate this conflict. Thanks.

There are many PCI devices, exactly what does the entry show?

However, when doing an install the correct and required install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Dell Desktop System Software (on applicable models), (3) Motherboard chipset drivers (4) Device Drivers.

Many install problems, posted on here, have been because the chipset drivers were skipped, and missing chipset drivers will lead to devices not installing or even your PCI issue.  If the chipset drivers were skipped (i see several on the Dell downloads for this model and XP), install them and see if that fixes the problem.

One other issue, I see you have XP, SP2.  Microsoft is discontinuing support for XP, SP1 and SP2 (I think July 12th) and you need SP3 to continue to get Microsoft updates.

Good day and thanks for the response.Under Device Manager, it only say 'PCI Device'.

I re-did the steps to make sure that I was doing it correctly:

1) Installed OS (Windows XP SP2)

2) Installed the System Drivers using Resource CD:

- R227558 - Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility Rev: A01 - eliminated SM Bus Controller issue

- R218459 - Intel AMT SOL/LMS Rev: A00 - eliminated PCI Serial Port issue

- R218457 - Intel AMT HECI Rev: A00 - eliminated PCI Simple Communications Controller issue

3) Installed the Video Drivers using Resource CD:

- R224779 - nVidia NVS 420 Rev: A07 - eliminated Video Controller (VGA Compatible) and 3D Video Controller issues

4) Installed the Network Drivers using Resource CD:

- R197373 - Intel 825xx Gigabit Platform LAN Network Device Rev: A00 - eliminated Ethernet Controller issue

5) Installed the following:

- Windows Installer 3.1

- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

- Windows XP Service Pack 3

After step 5 (coming from a restart), I was prompted for an driver for the audio device. I checked the Resource CD and found no drivers for the audio device. I then downloaded the drive from Dell (R228747) and after installation (and reboot), there are no more device conflicts under Device Manager.

Appreciate all the assistance here! Cheers! :emotion-1:

All of those hits helped! A neat little shortcut I was able to find is ising Dell's FTP URLs:

For instance:

http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/

Or google DELL R227558 and you'll get that reference.

Thanks bigdaddyph!
