pictures in .gif format don't work

Question

They just remain still as if they were .jpg format.  How can I adjust my settings to allow the animation in .gif?   thank you M Message Edited by magoo112 on 08-15-2005 12:11 PM

Are you using dial up or broadband.....Broadband will give this to you, but I believe dial up will not.  Too slow.   I could be wrong

Not all gif's are animated.  Are you sure you have animated gif's?

I'm using broadband...on my other computer (that no longer has access to the internet until i get a router) .gif formats worked fine, i just can't figure out why they don't on here.  I checked the 'Advanced' tap under internet options and couldn't see where i could check or uncheck anything that might help.  So i'm kinda at a loss.

My animations don't work either. I've eliminated possible causes such as ZA (not pro), McAfee anti-virus, I've tried opening IE as opposed to my firefox and still no animations, and .gif pictures show as a link to their originating website instead of as the picture itself. I reloaded many .dll files and those are fine. I tried to reload direct x but they want a validation code from my windows xp and even though I ran it through and validated it I have no code number to submit. If anyone finds a solution to this problem they will be greatly appreciated!

There is a setting in IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Multimedia section > Play animations in web pages. Checkmark this item.   Other programs that can stop this are AdBolish and Flash and Pics Control. It is most unlikely you have them installed, but you might want to try them. AdBolish also blocks server domain websites (using the hosts file), it's a very useful program, but at a cost. Flash and Pics Control is free, and can quickly turn animations, flash, ActiveX etc. on/off with one click.   Note: MSN Messenger follows in Internet Explorer's steps. It follows all of it's rules, so it is more than likely what is disabled/enabled in IE will be the same for MSN Messenger. Message Edited by Robert Cathles on 08-16-2005 08:41 PM

This might mean that you have to repair it's file association.

In any folder, go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > type in GIF or scroll down to it (just type it in, there are no text boxes, but typing in GIF will automatically take you down the list instead of scrolling) > then highlight the GIF association and click Delete. To confirm it's removal, click Yes.

That will remove it's association from the registry, I hope. You could manually edit the registry if you want to. By deleting it (either way) it remove the association with it, for example, there could be a certian image program or whatever attached to it that it trying to preview GIF images or something.

There are two options to re-assocaite it, please choose either one. If the one you have chosen doesn't work, start the instructions from the beginning of this message and then do the other one.

1) At this stage you can try opening a GIF file with the Open With context menu item (right-click on it) and choose your appropriate program. Checkmark 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'. This method will not restore the system icon, but it can be set later.

2) To set the system default program and icon for GIF files, do the following:
a) In any folder, go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > New button
b) In the File Extension box, type in GIF and click OK.
c) On the main dialog, make sure GIF is highlighted and then click Advanced.
d) In the box at the top, type Graphics Interchange Format.
e) Click Change Icon, type in shimgvw.dll, press ENTER (on keyboard), then choose and highlight the 3rd icon with the square, circle and triangle. Click OK.
f) Click the New button, in Action type Preview and then click Browse, and browse to the program you want to use. The system default to type in the 'Application use to perform action' box is C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1. Make sure that Use DDE is unchecked. Click OK. The file type is now set. Try opening them.

I did all of that just now and it's still not working...it must be a program that's on the computer that's preventing the animation.
for example, on most computers, this link for Yahoo emoticons shows each emoticon in it's animation:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/emoticons.php;_ylt=Ao6PgPncF0LeAfsJoNgE0TtwMMIF, on this computer however, they are all still as if they're only jpg.

and for the life of my I can't figure out why

I finally went into my system tools and did a system restore going back 2 months and now I have my animations back. I still don't know what caused the problem but thanks for trying.

update. It was my ZoneAlarm (just plain ZA...not pro) that was causing the problem. I updated it (since doing the system restore must have brought it back a few steps) and my animations went out again. I uninstalled it and they work correctly now. Just thought you might need to know for future help.

Thanks for the info. I am pleased that you got it fixed.   I don't use Zone Alarm myself (no wonder why), but now that it's fixed, future forum members with the same problem can find out the answer here.   Happy surfing!
