Playing DVD on laptop

Hello All,

Could someone tell me why when playing a DVD on my new Inspiron 5000 Series it produces the picture in a 4:3 (or maybe it's a square) format. This does not happen when the same DVD is played on an ordinary DVD player where it displays in a 16:9 format.

The laptop came with a Cyberlink Power Media player. I have been advised to try another media player and have downloaded a VDL one. However, I am still getting the smaller format.

Any ideas?

Software DVD players have the ability to change aspect ratios and do all sorts of things.  I haven't used Cyberlink PM for a long time, however check the settings in the menu bar to see if you can change the aspect ratio of the DVD from either 4:3 to AUTO or 4:3 to 16:9.

Thank you for that suggestion. Will try it.
