Pop up asks me to register my computer with Dell
Under normal circumstances, not a problem. However, none of the buttons work.
Privacy Policy is the only working link on the window. The window pops up at random, some time after booting, and can not be minimized or moved. I have no problem with registering, however all I want is for the window to go away now. My laptop is a Dell Studio 14z running Windows Vista.

Will
The problem has been raised many, many, many times in these Forums
Windows type prompts are invariably generated by Windows Startup items (exe. type files) & associated Services that automatically load on Windows Startup
A program used by Dell Support Center to scan computer & provide user with update-messaging information, drivers, performance etc… will generate such a prompt if scan fails to detect a correct registry value
The file is sprtcmd.exe
For example, last year sprtcmd starting causing Windows XP shutdown to hang for many Dell users
Most users just waited & clicked on End Task at Shutdown prompt (very annoying)
Some disabled sprtcmd & dsca startup items then uninstalled the Dell Support Center software
Both were “workaround” solutions
The correct fix/solution for XP was to install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0
Anyway, for Vista & assuming you have definitely checked that your computer has been registered with Dell, then the likely culprit is questionable SupportSoft software (Dell Support Center software/service provider)
And in the absence of a proper fix from Dell, the following are suggested “workaround” solutions
You can either:
1. Run msconfig utility Start > Run then type the term msconfig then click OK
Click on Services tag & uncheck to disable (if present) SupportSoft Sprocket Service
Then click on Startup tag & uncheck to disable (if present) any Startup Items that reference Dell Support Center in the Command path, e.g. sprtcmd, dsca & SupportSoft
You can always go back & checkbox enable them if required
Or
2. Use Run as Administrator
Forum member dwlovell reckons it’s a Vista UAC (User Account Control) application problem/issue & suggests creating an application desktop shortcut, then right click shortcut & select Run As & select Admin

when it pops up ctrl, alt delete at the same tine tell it to open task manager the file on the top search for it then delete it and it will never ask again. Mine kept doing it and had to delete the register file from dell.
