PRE-INSTALL of Sp2. PROBLEM !HELP!

Dell dimension desktop 8300 windows xp home edition Sp1 (OEM)

Hi- I want to install  sp2 on a pc of my friends. I have been
successfull doing this installation on 2 of my personal pc's. I am following the advice doing the pre-install basics to ensure another smooth installation, by following Jupiter Jones @ his web site again.

I used this same check list ( on my two personal Dell pc's) and all went well with those. I am having a problem on my friends pc. ANyways, on this check list, it states on #11 on J.Jones site, that I should do this check by typing in the "run" box regsvr32.exe licdll.dll"
&that DllRegisterServer in licdll.dll should show as succeeded- it did
But, the next step was to type in the run
box. And that it should ALSO suceed. it does NOT .   What shows instead is this :
DllRegisterServer in regwizc.dll FAILED - return code was :
0x80040154

I already contacted Dell by phone. they said to call Microsoft. Microsoft told me to call Dell. Also, I have posted my problem in a few forums asking for assistance. I have had some great people try to help. But, none seems to work. SO, here I am. ASking for help here. maybe someone will know what to do.

Note: I may add that I have my friends pc becuase she asked me to help her look at it. it was acting weird. I suspected malware of all types and that was the case. I need to give this back to her soon. I will try to keep it a day or two longer to see if I can get help. I would have hoped to return her pc to her with Sp2 installed. thank you

Hi gator-I downloaded the following zip file Regsv32a.exe  from the web site you suggested. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;277964&sd=tech

I  did the RESOLUTION in by typing C:\Regsvr32.exe Sample.dll in the comand prompt and it says it is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Then I tried to do the registration by going to run and typing again, regsvr32.exe licdll.dll . in RUN -Before, it instantly said that DllRegisterServer in licdll.dll succeeded. THis time the "file download box poped up and when I clicked open, then it showed DllRegisterServer in licdll.dll succeeded.  Before, this extra step was not needed. until I downloaded this Regsv32a.exe

ANyways, i did the next step in the run box, typed  regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll . again, This  "file download" box poped up. I  clicked open and it failed, DllRegisterServer in regwizc.dll  FAILED as it did before the download of Regsv32a.exe

anyways, when I typed   C:\Regsvr32.exe Sample.dll   in the "run"  box, windows said it fails. none of the things on this site worked. I tried

ALSO  , went to this one to do the instructions in the RESOLUTION at   ,   http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=270855   and typed in comand promt >and they all turned up saying " load library failed, specific module could not be found.

FIRst of all, HOw can i fix it so that if I want to type this regsvr32.exe licdll.dll   &  regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll   in the RUN box, the 'file download box wont prompt me to click 'open', each time.

also, anything else i can try- thanks for your time

azyardies,

The link that you downloaded the file from applies to Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000 Standard Edition. If you pasted the regsvr32.exe contained in the download to your C:\Windows\system32 folder you have replaced Windows XP's version of the file (5.1.2600.2180) with version 4.0.1381.0, which probably explains the difference in performance.

To undo this, run system file checker (Start|Run, enter sfc /scannow and click OK). This will replace any missing/corrupted system files. I suspect that it will not only replace the older version of regsvr32 but also regwizc.dll and subsequently will allow you to register regwizc.dll.

Dennis, I did as you suggested:   regarding  trying to get rid of extra step when I downloaded this thing >Regsv32a.exe

Start|Run, enter sfc /scannow and click OK).

You stated " This will replace any missing/corrupted system files. I suspect that it will not only replace the older version of regsvr32 but also regwizc.dll and subsequently will allow you to register regwizc.dll."

well, it did not work.     :smileysad:I tried going to "run" to do the registering again, and that file download box popped up as before. Let me add that yes, you were right, it is an older version for older windows. here is the some stuff in the text file note
Installation
------------
Although this application can be run from any folder, it is suggested that
Regsvr32.exe be copied to your Windows\System folder in Microsoft Windows 95
or your Windows\System32 folder in Microsoft Windows NT.
------
keep in mind that I did not copy and paste it anywhere. text file of this is on my desk top along with the executable REGSVR32   can you help me fix this.

azyardies,

I downloaded the file myself just to see what it was, checked it out, then deleted it. It did not "install" itself in my system--the proper version of regsvr32.exe is still in my system32 folder and is the file used when I register a dll file. I have no idea why it has apparently "decided" to become the active version on your computer, but using System Restore to a date prior to downloading it should return you to normal operation.

Denny, you said this," I downloaded the file myself just to see what it was, checked it out, then deleted it. "  well, I guess I feel foolish now. I had it still on my desktop. so, I placed it in the recycle bin, thus deleteing  it as you did, and that did the trick to this problem. :smileyindifferent:

But, I still have the other issue:smileysad: about the "regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll"  showing as FAILED (Dllregisteredserver in regwizc.dll  return code 0x80040154).
I am afraid to install sp2 and run into big problems due to this error. Does anyone know what this error really means?? for example, does it mean that a/this  file is missing, corrupted, etc.

Question # 1 about going ahead and installing:
If I start doing the intallation of sp2, and run into problems, and decide to UN-do any installation that was in progress or that was accomplished, what is the procedure to remove sp2 ? How do I terminate the installation when I get the error?? never encountered this problem and I will assume that I WILL have problems, (though I will keep my hopes up that it will instlal smoothly)

Question # 2 about restore point/system restore (separate from this)
If I ever need to use system restore to go back (lets say) 3 days, and it turns out that an issue was not resolved, how do I go forward to the current day. is that possible?
sorry too many questions. thanks for your time
