Preview/Contextual popup windows don't stay on screen
I may be calling these by the wrong name, but there are 3 types of menus/displays that aren't working properly:
- Task bar preview windows
- ALT-TAB options
- Contextual drop-downs in applications
The behavior is the same for all. The menu/display will appear for a fraction of a second, and then disappear. The first two are pretty self explanatory - the previews on items in the task bar that pop up above the task bar, and the open windows when you press ALT and Tab. These both appear for a fraction of a second and then disappear.
For the last one, when I'm in an application that uses contextual drop-down menus, the same behavior is seen. For example, with Coffee Cup's HTML editor, when I type an HTML tag and hit space, it presents an in-line dropdown menu which shows relevant modifiers to that tag. The menu displays for a fraction of a second, but almost immediately disappears.
Steps I've tried to date:
- Disconnect everything from the laptop, including the power cord (thought it might be an external device causing problems)
- Use an external mouse and deactivate the built-in trackpad (thought it might be registering movement when none existed)
System info:
- AlienWare M17x
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
- 4 GB RAM
Peripherals:
- AlienWare OptX monitor
- Logitech G15 keyboard
- Logitech LX3 Optical Mouse
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I appear to have found what may have been the problem. My BIOS was version A02. The current version is A05. After updating the BIOS, the functionality appears to be stable.
