problem installing / removing suite works 2003

I just reinstalled windowsxp and afterwards proceeded to reinstall my programs.  When reinstalling works suite 2003, the first disc, it stopped towards the end without finishing.  I still continued and installed the remaining discs with no problem. Later I was unable to use word, apparently it didn't get installed properly, if at all, so I decided to reinstall it. I went to add/remove programs to remove everything and start over. I was able to remove everything except word, which is on the first disc. When I put the 1st disc in, a box immediately comes up and says installing word, in addition another box comes up starting the installation but stops about half way. The only way to remove is through task manager.  I've tried removing in safe mode.  I've used systemworks to delete all the suite works files but still every time I put that first disc in, it wants to install word, as if picking up where I left off the very first time I tried to install, which was many frustrating hours ago (about 10 hours of trying to fix this problem).  Word is not the only program on that disc. I am seriously stuck.

Other than this all else is fine.
