Problem on Login - 0x80040057

This morning I started using my Inspiron 8200 and I blue-screened, something about a driver loading when it wasn't supposed to. So I tried to restart my computer, but upon login, I received the error message: "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0x80040057." I haven't tried to restart in Safe Mode (I'll be doing that shortly and I'll post a reply about it).

I'm afraid that I may have to reinstall Windows, but I want to avoid that at all costs.

I do have restore points saved, but I don't know how to restore to them, so I'm hoping if you can tell me how to restore to them, it will solve my problem.

If I do have to reinstall Windows, what's the option to reinstall without losing any data?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

CSmith,

For System Restore go to Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Restore. Choose a restore point from one of the bold dates displayed.

If that does not work, you can do a Repair Reinstall of Windows using the procedure here. This will preserve your data but you will have to reinstall all Windows updates you have applied since receiving the computer.

If worst comes to worst, reinstallation instructions are here.

Oh thank you very much for your quick response. I greatly appreciate it. Thanks for telling me about the system restore and for giving me the instructions for the installs. Thanks. I'll go try the restore now.

Thanks again.

CSmith06,

The link works for me. Try simply entering the URL:

Well Safe mode didn't work so I can't get to my restore points.

There's only one problem with your suggestion...the link for directions to the Repair Install is broken. : (

I tried Repair Reinstalling XP...twice...both times I got the error message

"Software Installation has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.

The software will not be installed. Contact your system administrator."
