Problem ordering Windows 7 free upgrade
I am in Canada. I tried getting phoning Dell for last 3 hours but gave up in frustration as I got no answers. They just kept transferrring me to someone else. I have a Dell Studio desktop 540 with Vista 64 bit.. I am eligible for free upgrade to windows 7. I went to page where you apply for upgrade, filled in all info including Service tag number which is on top of my computer. I keep getting error "System is not in our data base. Please verify that you have entered correct Service Tag and review criteria if you feel you have reached this in error, have your receipt ready and contact Dell.". What phone number at Dell? I've already phoned several and didn't get anywhere? My service tag is correct. When I first got my computer, I opened an account on Dell thinking it was for tech. support but found later it was for ordering, which I wasn't doing. When I go on Dell account it comes up with my service tag number automatically. On that account, I didn't put my real name. I thought it was just to register my computer. Could that have anything to do with the problem I have ordering my free Win 7 upgrade. Can anyone help. Thanks.

Book92: I had a similar problem trying to set up the free Windows 7 deal. The input process would stop at the page that asked for "more info about your computer" (which was already filled in by the system, correctly!). Did this for several weeks and couldn't get past that page. I finally called Dell, explained problem, and the next day it worked online. So they did something at their end.
Like you, I had entered all the correct data (online system "accepted" my service tag), but some at Dell needed to "attach" something to my record internally so the system would complete the process.
Instead of calling a Dell help/tech line, call the line for ordering and see if they can transfer you to someone who can help you. I think that's what I did (was a month ago).

Bob, I spent over 2 hours yesterday phoning various Dell phone numbers and one of them was the Order phone line. The guy there asked for my order number. I said I don't have an order I only want to ask how do I get my windows 7 free upgrade disc. He said he is only looking after orders. It was hard to communicate with him because whenever I spoke to him, my voice was an echo right after and when he talked it was over my echo. After a few minutes he asked for my Service tag which I gave him from the sticker on top of my computer which says "Service tag number" so it was correct. He said he would transfer me to someone who could help me. Not always a good sign. Next thing I know, the line is dead, then a dial tone. Very annoying. Other calls to other numbers were just as fruitless and one other Dell person gave me a phone number for an out of service number. I even did Live chat and the person gave me a link to somewhere on Dell that had nothing to do with my windows upgrade . Why does Dell have all these problems when people are trying to order their free upgrade. It shouldn 't be this hard. Its really ticked me off with Dell if this is what its going to be likein future. I'm in Canada but shouldn't matter. I'm not familiar with this forum and not sure how to get a private message. I hope it won't take weeks like you. I've only got till Dec.31 to get the upgrade. So frustrated.

Jesse L - I got your above message, but how do I access a private message? I looked all over this site. I'm new here and not much experience with foruoms, so don't know how things are set up here. Thanks.

I had similar problems. I tried to contact Dell a few times in January to find out how I could take advantage of the free Windows 7 upgrade that was part of my original purchase, and one of the main reasons I chose to buy at all last year. Good news! I finally got somebody on the phone to answer my questions that didn't send me to a dead-end number or "accidentally" hang up. Bad news! The offer is no longer honored! Yes, seriously. I ordered a computer with a free upgrade, but now I'm told that was a limited time offer!? That information was never disclosed to me in the purchase experience, and I feel cheated. I've been a loyal Dell customer for years, purchasing 2 personal and a few dozen business computers last year. If this doesn't work out to my satisfaction, I'm taking my business elsewhere. Any Dell Representatives out there that can help me out?

The free upgrade offer expired Jan 31st. That's the length of time that MS allowed manufacturers to offer the freebie and Dell gave plenty of warning. You have to buy it now. Try the link provided for a private solution, but don't hold your breath. I don't know why eligible buyers didn't take advantage of registering as soon as they could.
